Pilate (Rome) gave the Jews a choice between either releasing Barabbas or Jesus. They chose Barabbas for release instead of Jesus. Pilate could not find justification for executing Jesus. When he asked the Jewish leaders what they wanted done with Jesus they shouted "Crucify Him!"
