SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket to launch secretive X-37B space plane  today after delay

Dec 11, 2023

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket is poised to launch the X-37B space plane for the U.S. Space Force on tonight (Dec. 11) after a one-day delay due to weather, and you can likely watch the action live.

Liftoff of the Falcon Heavy is scheduled to occur from Launch Complex-39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, during a 10-minute window that opens at 8:14 p.m. EST (0114 GMT Dec. 12). If, as expected, SpaceX webcasts the liftoff, you can watch it live here at Space.com. SpaceX announced its delay of the flight by 24 hours early Sunday.

"Now targeting Monday, December 11 for Falcon Heavy’s launch of the USSF-52 mission, with weather conditions forecasted to improve to 70% favorable for liftoff on Monday night," SpaceX wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "The team will use the time to complete additional pre-launch check outs."

The upcoming launch will be the seventh launch to date for the reusable X-37B space plane its first-ever ride on a Falcon Heavy, which could have consequences for its coming orbital mission.

Five of the six X-37B launches to date have employed United Launch Alliance Atlas V rockets, with one other using a SpaceX Falcon 9. Falcon Heavy, which utilizes three Falcon 9 boosters as its first stage, outclasses both of those other rockets when it comes to getting mass to orbit. According to a recent Space Force release, some of the objectives of the coming X-37B mission, known as OTV-7 ("Orbital Test Vehicle-7"), include "operating in new orbital regimes," which, given the launch vehicle, may indicate a higher orbit than usual, farther from Earth.

The upgrade in launch vehicle may also have to do with mass. The X-37B features a cargo bay to house equipment and experiments, and it could be carrying a secondary mission payload that requires Falcon Heavy's added lift capability.

The uncertainty here is not surprising; most details of X-37B missions are classified. However, USSF-52 does carry at lease one unclassified experiment: NASA's "Seeds-2" project, which will test the effects of radiation and long-duration spaceflight on plant seeds.

Each successive X-37B mission has been longer than its predecessors, with its most recent orbital jaunt lasting 908 days. That mission, called OTV-6, landed in November 2022.

EXCLUSIVE Watchdog calls on US to ban candy cancer chemicals as UK begins SEIZING Mountain Dew, Jolly Rancher, Swedish Fish and Lemonhead amid crackdown on American junk food that is linked to infertility and health issues

UPDATED: 17:05 EST, 11 December 2023

A US watchdog has told DailyMail.com that the seizure of American candies in the UK should be a wake-up call for Americans about what's in their food.

On Monday, footage from the UK showed workers stuffing American candy and sodas - which are found in virtually every US store — into trash bags as regulators get tough on US imports.

Candies like Jolly Rancher, Swedish Fish and Lemonhead contain several additives that are legal in the US but banned under EU and UK law due to their links to cancer, infertility and other problems.

The watchdog Consumer Reports said the video should trigger a shift in food policy in the US and urged officials here to 'do more' to protect adults and children.

They called for the list of food additives banned in the US to be expanded — to include more food dyes and chemicals outlawed in Europe years ago.

The Food and Drugs Administration has been under increasing pressure to tighten its regulations on food additives in recent months.

California outlawed four food additives — brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propyl paraben, and red dye no.3 — in October amid concerns over their links to cancer and other health problems.

New York and Pennsylvania are now also looking to follow suit, DailyMail.com exclusively revealed.

Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, said: 'The chemical additives that are to be banned under the California law are certainly a good start for addressing this issue in the US.

'However, as this import action in the UK highlights, more needs to be done.

'The list of chemical additives to target and scrutinize should be expanded to include synthetic food dyes and other chemicals that have been linked to cancer and other adverse health conditions.'

He added: 'What is ultimately needed in the US is for the FDA to modernize and strengthen its regulatory process for food additives.'

The UK and European Union outlawed many of these additives decades ago.

Representatives in California say that everyone in America deserves to be 'as well protected' as people in Europe.

Dr Carolyn Williams, a dietician based in Alabama, told DailyMail.com that she hoped the images would 'motivate' US regulators to take action.

'We should be moving the way that Europe is moving, the way that California is moving,' she said. 'That would be a great first step for the country.'

'We are way overdue in the US to adopt some of the EU's food policies.'

Biden Admin Sends Billions To California For Brightline West Rail Project

12:28 PM – Monday, December 11, 2023

The Biden Administration declared that it is sending $3 billion in federal taxpayer funds to California for the state’s high-speed rail project.

On Tuesday, the Biden Administration announced that it is sending California $3 billion in federal taxpayer funds for the Brightline West rail project, which covers a quarter of the cost for a high-speed rail line that is set to run from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Los Angeles, California.

Brightline, which is the nation’s only private passenger rail operator offering high-speed service, requested $3.75 billion to help with the project out of about $12 billion in costs.

Advocates anticipate that the project will reduce emissions, ease traffic, and provide a more affordable means of transportation between Las Vegas and California. Every year, about 16 million people travel through the Mojave Desert on Interstate-15 toward Southern California from Las Vegas.

According to Brightline, the rail connection would result in the annual elimination of 3 million car trips.

The trains will run as fast as 180 miles per hour and will have the ability to hold about 500 passengers as often as every 45 minutes, Brightline stated.

We are deeply honored to receive a federal grant from @POTUS to help build the nation's first high speed rail project in partnership with @nevadadot. We are ready to get to work, connecting communities and redefining the future of transportation. #BrightlineWest #highspeedrail pic.twitter.com/hG1ziSI5y9

The proposed Brightline West project would connect with the existing regional rail system in Los Angeles at Rancho Cucamonga, California, after running from a new station close to the Las Vegas Strip.

It would take just under three hours to complete the trip.

A group of lawmakers from Nevada and California have consistently pushed for federal funding to assist in the project for months, saying that Brightline West was needed for economic growth.

“This historic high-speed rail project will be a game changer for Nevada’s tourism economy and transportation,” Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) said in a statement. “It’ll bring more visitors to our state, reduce traffic on the I-15, create thousands of good paying jobs, and decrease carbon emissions, all while relying on local union labor.”

Rosen additionally mentioned that the $3 billion grant is funded from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The Brightline West rail project was initially approved 15 years ago and has since experienced unheard-of delays and been remarkably downsized. Earlier this year, the company introduced the first-ever high-speed Orlando to Miami service.

The project is set to be fully constructed by 2027, which will be just in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

On Friday, President Joe Biden will be in Las Vegas, where most assume he will officially announce the Brightline West rail project to the public.
