OKLAHOMA: "The Dixie Mafia boss who ordered a federal judge and his wife killed in Biloxi is asking for compassionate release from federal prison. Kirksey McCord Nix was convicted of orchestrating the deaths of Judge Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret, a Biloxi councilwoman, in 1987. He was sentenced to life in prison. The hitman, Thomas “The Thumb” Holcomb of Texas, and former Biloxi Mayor Pete Halat, also were convicted for their parts in the the Sherrys’ deaths.

Nix, now 80, has filed a request for compassionate release. He has congestive heart failure and other medical issues and says he is only able to eat, bathe and use the restroom with the help from a paid inmate. He also is wheelchair bound. If released, Nix said relatives who are health care workers, would care for him. Federal officials say he is being adequately cared for and should not be released. U.S. District Judge Keith Starret, who inherited the case, will decide whether or not Nix will be released."

*Sheriff Buford Pusser believed Nix was responsible for the attempted murder of him, and the murder of his wife, Pauline Pusser. The crash that ultimately killed Sheriff Pusser was likely the result of sabotage ordered by Nix.
