How the ADL now shapes the school Christmas experience

ADL Helps Schools Navigate Through the December Dilemma

To help negotiate the December Dilemma, we offer suggestions for appropriately acknowledging the December holidays while remaining sensitive and in compliance with the U.S. Constitution.

ADL’s education staff also shares Considerations for Inclusive Holidays and Observances with educators planning holiday observances in the classroom.

Some of the suggested guidelines for public schools and government buildings include:

  • Holiday activities should not involve religious coercion.

  • Schools should be careful not to cross the line between teaching about religious holidays (which is permitted) and celebrating religious holidays (which is not).

  • Special events, assemblies, concerts and programs should be designed to further a secular and objective program of education and should not focus on any one religion or religious observance.

  • Religious symbols are not appropriate seasonal decorations.

  • In an effort to be ecumenical, it is not advisable to rely on information provided by a representative child of a minority religion.

Considerations for Inclusive Holidays and Observances

–For Educators

Holiday celebrations are an excellent opportunity to provide a window into a culture or understand more about a group of people, as well as reinforce the diversity of all people’s experiences. Students can engage in rich educational experiences by reading about, researching and experiencing holidays.

In order to ensure that holidays and observances are truly educational, they also need to be inclusive and respectful. Below is an abbreviated version of some important considerations when planning holiday observances in your classroom or school. [Download full article]

Rethink Restrictive Gender Norms Around Family, Gender and Sexual Orientation

Be aware of how some holidays can reinforce restrictive social norms around gender identity and sexual orientation. For example, as students get older and Valentine’s Day becomes more focused on romantic relationships and not friendships, celebrations may reinforce heterosexist notions that all relationships are between a boy and a girl and marginalize LGBTQ youth, or youth who simply are not interested in romantic relationships.

Another example is Mother's Day and Father's Day. Be mindful not to make assumptions about children's family structure and their parents' gender identity.
