Biden pledges $200 million for Ukraine after Zelensky meeting

The US leader urged Congress to pass stalled “supplemental funds” for Kiev as he met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky

US President Joe Biden has promised another $200 million in emergency military aid for Ukraine. He made the pledge during an Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Tuesday.

Themeeting comes after a bill intended to provide $60 billion in aid for Kiev was blocked in the US Senate last week, as Republicans demanded tougher immigration control on the southern US border in exchange for approving Ukraine assistance.

Speaking to reporters after the Tuesday meeting,Biden insistedthat Congress “pass the supplemental funding for Ukraine” before breaking for recess, adding that failure to do so would be “the greatest Christmas gift” to Russian President Vladimir Putin. (Funding more of your family’s money through Ukraine, everyone knows it!)

“The decisions we make now are going to determine the future for decades to come, particularly in Europe,” Biden said.

The latest $200 million in aid announced by Biden will come from the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which allows the Biden administration to transfer weapons from US stocks without congressional approval in case of an emergency.

The package will include ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), high-speed anti-radiation missiles, anti-armor systems, artillery rounds, missiles, demolition munitions, 4 million rounds of small arms ammunition, generators and other equipment and spare parts, the Associated Press reported, citing US officials.

Earlier in the day, Zelensky met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to advocate for more aid amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The Ukrainian leader met with House Speaker Mike Johnson, as well as a number of other senators. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky said he had a “friendly and candid conversation” with senate leaders.

Republican leaderMitch McConnell told reporterson Tuesday, however, thatit would be “practically impossible” for Congress to pass the supplemental funding package, which includes the stalled $60 billion for Kiev, before Christmas, saying it needed to be done as part of a broader package that includes changes to border security policy.

On Monday, Ohio senatorSenator James David Vance called Zelensky’s trip “utterly disgraceful,” accusing the Ukrainian leader of coming to the US, “lecturing” Americans and “demanding” more of their taxpayer dollars.

Zelensky’s pleas to keep economic and military aid flowing come amid asix-month counteroffensive against Russia which has failed to yield significant results. Kiev’s troops have lost more than 125,000 military personnel and 6,000 pieces of heavy equipment since the beginning of June, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that the continued supply of Western aid and weapons will only prolong the conflict, but won’t change its ultimate outcome.

‘I am a Zionist’ – Biden

The US will provide military aid to Israel “until they get rid of Hamas,” the American president said

US President Joe Biden expressed his “unshakable” commitment to Israel’s security at a White House reception event on Monday, marking the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. He also pledged continued military support for West Jerusalem amid its conflict with the Gaza-based Palestinian militant group, Hamas.

The US remains Israel’s most important ally amid the ongoing conflict, which has sparked widespread condemnation in the Muslim world and beyond over Israeli bombardments of Gaza. The strikes have led to heavy civilian casualties, according to local medical authorities.

On Monday, Biden blasted what he called a “sickening” surge of anti-Semitism both in the US and around the world amid the conflict.“We see it across our communities and schools and colleges and social media,” he said, adding that “silence is complicity.”

Speaking to Jewish lawmakers and other attendees, the president said that his “commitment to the safety of the Jewish people and the security of Israel, its right to exist as an independent Jewish state, is unshakeable.” He then vowed to “continue to provide military assistance to Israel until they get rid of Hamas,” adding, however, that both Washington and West Jerusalem had to be careful not to antagonize “the world’s public opinion.

Over the weekend, theBiden administration bypassed congressional authority over military aid to Israel and granted emergency approvalfor the sale of $106.5 million worth of tank ammunition to West Jerusalem. The move came as the White House struggled to gain congressional approval for $106 billion in supplemental security spending, including $14.3 billion for Israel.

The US president also said that he felt an “unquestionable” connection to the Jewish community.“I ran into trouble and criticism when I said a few years ago that you don’t have to be Jewish to be a Zionist, and I am a Zionist,”he added, speaking to a gathering of some 800 people.

Last week, the US was the only member of the UN Security Council to veto an emergency resolution calling for an emergency ceasefire in Gaza. Last Friday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “there is a serious risk of starvation and famine,” noting that 97% of households in northern Gaza and 83% of displaced people in the south “are not eating enough.”

Israel launched its military operation in Gaza in response to a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7 that claimed the lives of some 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians. More than 240 people were also taken hostage by the militants.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded with massive bombings of the Palestinian enclave, followed by a ground operation. The death toll in the enclave linked to Israeli actions has surpassed 18,400, according to the latest estimates by the Gaza Health Ministry

(He should go and be the resident in Ukraine or Israel since he loves these countries more than America.)

US lawmakers demand answers on Ukraine

Questions to the Ukrainian president during his meeting with US legislators were “very scripted,” Senator Eric Schmitt laments

Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has failed to provide any new arguments in defense of his causeduring his talks in Washington with American lawmakers, several senators and representatives, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have told the media in the wake of the meeting on Tuesday.

Zelensky arrived in the capital to hold a series of meetings with top US officials to save a $61-billion aid package for Kiev that remains in limbo. Last week, GOP senators blocked the Biden administration’s major $111-billion supplemental funding request, which included aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, citing the Democrats’ reluctance to address the tense situation on the US-Mexico border.

Some Republicans have alsorepeatedly pointed to the lack of accountabilityin terms of the funds Washington had spent on helping Ukraine.

According to senior GOP senator LindseyGraham, Tuesday’s meeting has failed to bring about any changes in the lawmakers’ stance. “Nothing has changed,” he told journalists. The South Carolina senator, who emerged as a staunch supporter of Kiev amid its conflict with Moscow, explained that, although he would like to aid Ukraine, border security comes first.

“I admire him, but he didn’t change my mind at all about what we need to do,” Graham said, referring to Zelensky and adding that theDemocrats were supposedly trying to “use” the Ukrainian leader “in a way that I think wasn’t helpful.” “I want to secure the border,” the senator said, adding that the number of people supposedly linked to various terrorist groups that were crossing America’s southern border was “just chilling.”

Another RepublicanSenator, Missouri’s Eric Schmitt, also said that themeeting was effectively reduced to “the same old stuff.” “There’s nothing new,” he told journalists, adding that the questions for the Ukrainian president “were very scripted.”

Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who also met Zelensky on Tuesday, pointed to the fact thatthe White House and Kiev were asking for billions of dollars with no oversight and no clear strategythat would allow Ukraine to prevail in the ongoing conflict.

Their responses have been insufficient,”Johnson said, referring to the Biden administration and adding that he had been requesting details on Washington’s strategy for Ukraine “over and over since literally 24 hours after I was handed the gavel as Speaker of the House.”

Lindsey Graham also told journalists thathe’d told Zelensky to be thankful to the House Speaker for even being willing to place military aid for Ukraine on the agenda. “I said you need to thank Mike Johnson for being willing to pass a package if border security is in it, because half his conference probably doesn’t agree with that,” the senator said.

The US has already provided Kiev with $111 billion in military and economic assistance since military confrontation between Moscow and Kiev began in February 2022. Washington has recently warned that funds for the government of Vladimir Zelensky have almost run out.

Last week, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that Kiev can’t expect additional funding until the gridlock in Congress is resolved. Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, then warned thatdelays in US assistance could lead to Ukraine’s defeat by Russia. (They are already defeated 100%!)

The Kremlin said on Tuesday that any further assistance Washington decides to provide to Kiev is doomed to fail from the start. No amount of money can change the situation on the front lines, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

(Worst decision to bring that weasel to lecture Congress, the resentment will only grow in the US.)

Zelensky (Desperation) stopover triggers political drama in African state

Cape Verde’s President Jose Maria Neves sayshe was surprised when head of government met with Ukrainian leader without consensus

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s short technical stop in Cape Verde last weekend has led to a row in the country's leadership.Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva seized the stopover opportunity to meet with Ukraine’s leader, prompting accusations of partisanship and opportunism from President Jose Maria Neves.

The prime minister's initiative will only tarnish the country’s international posture, Neves told journalists on Monday, pointing to the threat of unnecessary disputes within the government. He also insisted that he should have been informed about Correia e Silva’s plans in advance.

“There have to be adult people in the room to prevent institutional deterioration and unnecessary clashes… as well as damage to the country’s image,” the president said at the press meeting. The head of state added thathe felt “profoundly strange” about the whole situation.

“I will draw attention to this issue and take the measures that prove relevant,” the president said, without going into further detail. If “a counterpart of the President of the Republic”arrives in Cape Verde, such a development should be dealt with in close coordination between various government institutions, Neves pointed out, adding that the president “cannot be simply presented with a fait accompli on these matters.”

Correia e Silva hit backby saying thatrelations between the government and the president should not be discussed in the media or on social networks. He did not provide any other comments on the meeting itself or on the president’s reaction.

The Presidential Office in Kiev said that themeeting between Zelensky and Correia e Silvawas thefirst of its kind in the two nations’ history. The Ukrainian president praised Cape Verde’s “principled position” in support of Kiev and its “international initiatives.” He then called on the African nation to back his “peace formula” and invited the prime minister to visit Ukraine.

Neves branded the meeting a manifestation of “excessive partisanship”within Cape Verde’s government andslammed the cabinet over what he called “institutional disloyalty” in matters of foreign policy.

Zelensky met Correia e Silva during a two-hour stop at Cape Verde’s Sal international airport on his way to Latin America to rally support for Kiev’s cause. On Monday, during his visit to Argentina, he spoke about convening a summit between Ukraine and Latin American nations.

Kiev and its Western backers have been pushing the so-called “Zelensky peace formula” as the only possible basis for a negotiated resolution. The plan in particular demands that Russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine’s pre-2014 territories before talks between Moscow and Kiev can even commence.

Russia dismissed the proposal right after it was unveiled last year, describing it as detached from reality.

(The EU is ignoring him so he breaks diplomatic protocol to crash into a country uninvited. He is creating more anger toward Kiev and himself.)
