Driving a vehicle isn't two-dimensional, but anon agrees with you to a point.

To illustrate the extra dimensions, all you have to do is to imagine a dirt track racer steering with the throttle. Moar throttle equals moar oversteer equals moar delta V.

There's X and Y axes, but there's also compensation between rate of change in direction, thrust, traction (which is affected by gravity and other downforces along the Z axis)
