Japan PM Kishida's support sinks to 26% on slush fund scandal
[Won’t even address the Unification church issue and this is nothing new. Tried tax cuts and cabinet changes to distract-plus the economic issues (too many to list)-he’s got 2 months left tops and the LDP is on life support and he going down with the ship-I’m guessing there is some serious shit going on in the background of this that we not privy to like mebby with the Imperial Family but that just a wild guess and he was in SF for the APEC summit for longer than most leaders who attended iirc)
The approval rating for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's cabinet fell to a record low 26% amid a growing fundraising scandal that has led to the sacking of four ministers, the latest Nikkei-TV Tokyo poll shows. Support fell 4 points from the November poll to the lowest level since Kishida took office in October 2021, according to the survey conducted Friday and Saturday. Disapproval rose 6 points to 68%. Kishida on Thursday replaced Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno and three other cabinet members alleged to have concealed fundraising income at events hosted by their faction. Tokyo prosecutors have launched an investigation into the scandal. The scandal has further eroded Kishida's already low public support. The approval rating fell for three consecutive months while disapproval rose for four months in a row. The 26% support is the lowest since the ruling Liberal Democratic Party returned to power under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2012. Disapproval is also at a record high since then.
Asked why they do not back the cabinet, 43% of respondents cited bad policy, followed by 38% who were dissatisfied with the way the government and party affairs were managed.
Among cabinet supporters, 35% cited an LDP-centered lineup and 23% named trustworthiness.
The majority blamed Kishida for the scandal, with 67% saying the prime minister is responsible while 28% said he is not.
