Seriously? Because after Germany invaded and defeated Poland in 1939 Hitler was 'the leader of Poland' during the time in question.

From what I've read passersby and neighbors most often wondered what was causing the bad smell. Living with or in close proximity to violence perpetrated through mechanized warfare changes people.

There were many deaths from Typhus, Anon. Lice and Typhus were a consequence of any large gathering of humans throughout the world at that time. Malnutrition and disease killed plenty.
