the last time I went camping at a random place at a mountain campground thinking 'oh, what a great place to sleep for the night' I felt that 'huh, this is in full view of that highway, there isn't anyone else around. Tent fabric is no match for a shotgun blast' in the creepy wilds of Washington state. I got over my 'I want to travel on the cheep and sleep in a tent' phase that very night.
It was like I'd finally figured out something secret: when you travel in the wilderness you glow. If you're alone you're a target.

So I went to florida some time later and I scouted out the Ocala National forest thinking 'well, I suppose I could bed down in my tent here, still not fully convinced that it wasn't safe and thought 'If I was scared in rural Washington then why shouldn't I be warey here, too. And as I drove into the nationalo forest I saw all kinds of various people set up living there or just vacationing there and I thought 'this is easy too for someone horrible. I don't want to stay here either. So I bought myself a hotel room.
and it was a news story within a month I think, this back in the 1990s, that someone had done just what I feared, randomed shutgunning into tents in the Ocala National Forest . . .
Once when I was in California I stopped to walk a beach and chatty woman and her minion started trying to bring me home. By then I was fully aware of the facts of bad people doing really bad things to people. She was very angry and huffed off when I explained to her that I didn't do that kind of thing. If I'd gone with the two of them I don't know if I'd ever have made it back to the plane at the end of my trip.
