Car Slams Into Secret Service Vehicle Near Biden’s Delaware Campaign Offices
President Biden was speaking to reporters outside when a driver hit a sport utility vehicle associated with the White House. The president was not injured.
President Biden was interrupted while speaking with reporters in downtown Wilmington, Del., on Sunday when a sedan slammed into a Secret Service vehicle protecting the president’s motorcade, as he was leaving his re-election campaign offices.
Mr. Biden and Jill Biden, the first lady, were not injured, according to the White House. They had been attending an event at their campaign headquarters and having dinner with members of the campaign staff.
Mr. Biden was discussing his polling numbers when, just after 8 p.m., a silver vehicle with Delaware license plates ran into a Secret Service sport utility vehicle that was blocking an intersection with access to the street Mr. Biden was visiting.
In a statement, the Secret Service said “there was no protective interest associated with this event,” meaning the crash was accidental and the driver did not know Mr. Biden was at the event.
“The president’s motorcade departed without incident,” the agency said in the statement.
David Karas, a spokesman for the Wilmington Police Department, said nobody was injured in the collision. “Investigators are also working to determine if impairment was a factor,” Mr. Karas said.
The authorities outside responded to the collision, surrounding the car and aiming weapons at the driver before the driver surrendered, according to reporters in the White House press pool.
The officials could be heard demanding that the driver open his door, according to videos posted online. Photographers on the scene captured Mr. Biden, surprised, as he turned to look at the incident and before agents ushered him into his vehicle.

Supreme Court will hear a case that could undo Capitol riot charge against hundreds, including Trump
The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will hear an appeal that could upend hundreds of charges stemming from the Capitol riot, including against former President Donald Trump.
The justices will review a charge of obstruction of an official proceeding that has been brought against more than 300 people. The charge refers to the disruption of Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory over Trump.
That’s among four counts brought against Trump in special counsel Jack Smith’s case that accuses the 2024 Republican presidential primary front-runner of conspiring to overturn the results of his election loss. Trump is also charged with conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
The court’s decision to weigh in on the obstruction charge could threaten the start of Trump’s trial, currently scheduled for March 4. The justices separately are considering whether to rule quickly on Trump’s claim that he can’t be prosecuted for actions taken within his role as president. A federal judge already has rejected that argument.

When the delegation arrived at the prison, they departed from the planned tour, guided by a map drawn by a former detainee. The map led to the door of a building, which was opened from the inside by a guard when he heard the people outside the door talking. Inside they found prisoners were being shackled within cramped "tiger cages". Prisoners began crying out for water when the delegation walked in. They had sores and bruises, and some were mutilated. Harkin took photos of the scene. The photos were published in Life magazine on 17 July 1970.
