FDA finds ‘extremely high’ lead levels in cinnamon in applesauce at Ecuador plant

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that samples of cinnamon from the plant that were tested contained levels of lead more than 2,000 times as high as proposed international limits for lead in food. Cinnamon applesauce investigation finds lead levels more than 2,000 times higher than proposed standards, FDA says

The samples had “extremely high levels of lead contamination, 5110 parts per million (ppm) and 2270 ppm,” the agency said in an update Monday. “For context, the international standard-setting body, Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) is considering adopting a maximum level of 2.5 ppm for lead in bark spices, including cinnamon, in 2024.”

Recalled applesauce pouches now linked to more than 200 lead poisoning cases in 33 states, CDC says

Health authorities are now investigating at least 205 cases of lead poisonings across 33 different states linked to contaminated applesauce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday. That's up from 125 cases in the agency's last weekly tally.

The growing case count comes as the Food and Drug Administration continues its probe into the source of the tainted cinnamon blamed for the contamination.

Applesauce that sickened Texas children may have been tainted on purpose

Two months ago, the Food and Drug Administration warned the public not to buy or eat three brands of cinnamon applesauce snacks because of possible lead contamination. The manufacturers recalled the products, and state and federal health authorities launched investigations.

Now, the FDA says the contamination, which has sickened at least 65 children across the country, including in Texas, may have been deliberate.

Jim Jones, a deputy commissioner of the agency, told Politico that “all of the signals we’re getting lead to an intentional act on the part of someone in the supply chain, and we’re trying to sort of figure that out.”
