> Federal judge orders more than 150 names linked to Jeffrey Epstein unsealed

“We are pleased that the court has decided to unseal information about more than 150 individuals. Epstein and Maxwell’s abuses were shielded for far too long. The court concluded that three individuals who were “peripheral” to the matter would remain sealed. We are evaluating that decision and continue to believe that all of the court files should be released.” Thirteen other people fought unsuccessfully to keep their names secret. The rest on the list — about 150 people — did not object to being identified, presumably because their names are already publicly known as associates or employees of Epstein and Maxwell, a British socialite who was convicted in 2021 of sex trafficking underage girls. Their circle of friends included former presidents, world leaders and moguls in business and finance. To date, only Maxwell has been convicted of crimes associated with Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.

Since the Herald filed the lawsuit in 2018, thousands of pages have been released by Preska on a rolling basis. The piecemeal nature of the unsealing over the years resulted in many documents being released repeatedly, with different redactions each time, creating a puzzle with missing pieces. Aside from names being hidden, vast numbers of pages themselves were heavily redacted. However, this latest release will apparently have limited redactions — and thus possibly fill in some of the lingering questions about who helped Epstein.

Senior U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska on Monday ordered the final cache of names unsealed in two weeks, allowing a 14-day window for appeals. The judge described two of the three people whose names will remain sealed — J. Does 58 and 124 — as “classic outsiders peripheral to the events at issue” who are not associated with Epstein and Maxwell. A third, Doe 133, was mistakenly identified in a photo, according to the judge, who noted that Doe was characterized as “an alleged perpetrator” by a reporter. The judge did not further elaborate on her decision.

The sex scandal that wouldn't lie down

John Lichfield

Sunday 15 November 1998 01:02 GMT

IT READS like the synopsis of a trashy airport novel: sex, movie stars, politicians, Arab princes, arms deals and the courageous investigation of an obstinate, incorruptible - and publicity-hungry - judge. But the evidence to be presented to a criminal court in Paris this week also has a disturbing side - or, rather, two disturbing sides.

The case uncovers the brutal methods used to snare young women - some as young as 15 - into a call-girl agency specialising in wealthy, high- profile clients. It also exposes attempts by the French government machine to block an investigation which might embarrass senior politicians and damage French interests abroad.

Six people are charged with the running of an international prostitution ring, whose call-girls entertained the actor Robert de Niro, the former tennis player, Wojtek Fibak, two senior (but unnamed) French politicians and several Gulf princes. The agency specialised in tricking, or trapping, star-struck teenage girls into selling their bodies with the promise of careers as models or actresses.

At one point, according to the report of the investigating judge, the agency became a kind of approved dealer in girls, operating with the connivance, if not the blessing, of the French foreign ministry and French secret services. By steering Middle East arms clients towards girls from a known, and closely watched, agency, there was thought to be a reduced risk of blackmail, or the leaking of secret negotiations.

The American actor, Robert De Niro, was arrested by the French vice squad at the Bristol Hotel in Paris yesterday and held for questioning in connection with an international prostitution ring.

Justice officials stressed that Mr de Niro is considered a potential witness at this point. He was detained on a warrant by Judge Frederic N'Guyen, who has been investigating the prostitution ring since October 1996. Police officers questioned Mr de Niro for several hours at his hotel just around the corner from the French Interior Ministry, before taking him to Judge N'Guyen's chambers at the Palais de Justice in the evening. He was released after nine hours.

The former Polish tennis champion Wojtek Fibak - a party friend of the 54-year-old star of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Godfather and The Deer-Hunter - has already been placed under investigation for sexual assault in the same case.

Mr de Niro is in Paris for the making of Ronin, an action film by the director John Frankenheimer, about an American with a murky past. He is scheduled to remain until the end of March. Police had attempted to question him last Friday, but found he had already left the Bristol Hotel for the weekend.
