No 'Quasimodo': DMI skips Q for next storm name
The next time a storm is to be named in Denmark, it will not start with the letter Q, which will be skipped, and replaced with the letter R.
-
We have skipped Q to the next storm after we have looked at the possible Boy Names that are with Q, says the head of communication from the Danish Metrological Institute (DMI) Michael Skelbæk to Ritzau.
"There was no one here who was useful within the criteria needed for a name to be carried by a storm," he says.
One of the criteria DMI has that makes it difficult to name a storm with Q is that it should be easy to spell.
-
There are some of these names with Q, which are a bit difficult to spell, and then they are often very long names, says Michael Skelbæk.
But that's not the only criterion:
No double meaning - for example, a storm cannot be called Happiness.
The name must be short, and it must not be a double name, such as Maria Louise.
A storm in Denmark cannot be given a religious or a royal name, such as Jesus or Margrethe or a very special name, which only a few in Denmark are named.
DMI names the storms according to a system in which they are alternately given a boy name and a girl name with a first letter in alphabetical order.
The next name will be a boy name that begins with R - a commandment could be Rune or Rudolf-now that it's Christmas.
