Are you sure? If I recall correctly, the stayed on the earth facing side of the moon (to maintain radio contact) while the sun was opposite Earth (meaning the moon as seen from earth was at least partly, if not mostly illuminated).
It may be true he didn't see stars, but light from the sun would've been unatenuated and very bright.
