The justices, bottom right, delivered a blow to Smith by rebuffing his bid to leap-frog a lower court of appeals and speed up a ruling on the former president's claim he has immunity in the January 6 case. Trump has argued that the case should be dismissed because former presidents cannot face criminal charges for conduct related to their official responsibilities.
