He had not complete ROTC, the leadership training course. I believe he enlisted after talking to a recruiter while in college. I didn't know him well, but we did think he was crazy for getting a degree and then slugging it out with us in basic. We just assumed the patriotism bug got to him. When he left the unit was a little stranger because after that why would he go back to politics, he was very cynical about the system. It definitely wasn't that he couldn't handle it.
