Don't think it matters much anymore. The Linux Kernel source tree has become a circle jerk for corporations. They vie for the top contribution spots and fuckery ensures. The kernel will always be at the center of any distribution, so what are your reasons for choosing a Linux in the first place?
As another anon suggested, perhaps something like a *BSD would make more sense. If you simply want to get away from IBM/Redhat based CentOS/Fedora distributions there's always the Debian/Ubuntu heritage. Mint and ElementaryOS are both based on Ubuntu and are quite friendly. With Arch you'll have to dedicate cycles to setting everything up. For the true paranoid, a trip to your local pawn shop may be in order: buy a computer manufactured approximately before 1993 kek
