Back when conventions were actually real and deals had to be made to get someone the required number of delegates, the VP candidate was often selected during negotiations to see which one would allow enough delegates to move their votes to support the proposed ticket.
Trump is smart not to let on regarding any possible VP choices. The media will just have more time to put the Sarah Palin treatment on the potential choices. Also, if the media goes ahead and starts the disinfo campaign on who they think the likely choices are, Trump can watch and see how well they can handle the heat before selecting the best one.
