ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”
An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.
“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.
But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.
Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.
Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Democratic dark money kingmaker pumps millions into 'nonpartisan' Supreme Court watchdogs

"Nonpartisan" Supreme Court watchdogs demanding conservative justices disclose more about their finances hauled in millions of dollars combined in 2022 from the largest Democratic-allied dark money network in the United States, tax forms show.
The cash transfers, which became public Wednesday upon the release of new financial disclosures, underscore how groups leading a campaign targeting Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito over trips and gifts they accepted, but did not report, rely on influential left-wing grantmakers to help keep their lights on. Several of these self-described watchdogs took heaps of cash from nonprofit organizations managed by Arabella Advisors, a consulting firm overseeing an anonymously-funded network that spent over $1 billion last year propping up liberal causes.

Washington D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb (D) is investigating Arabella Advisors and its offshoots, including New Venture Fund and Sixteen Thirty Fund, and his office issued subpoenas to the network in September for information on financial mismanagement allegations. The consultancy also manages Hopewell Fund, North Fund, and Windward Fund, which, like others in the network, sponsor little-known groups that aren't required to file their own tax forms with the IRS.
"Arabella Advisors and the dark money groups it advises specialize in cultivating pop-up front groups to make their extreme agenda sound locally-run or nonpartisan," Carrie Severino, president of the conservative Judicial Crisis Network, told the Washington Examiner. "It’s no surprise they’re behind the campaign to discredit originalist justices."
JCN, the judicial advocacy group also known as Concord Fund, is affiliated with Federalist Society co-chair Leonard Leo, a conservative activist who, along with GOP businessman Harlan Crow, could face congressional subpoenas over their ties to Thomas and Alito. Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats decided against a vote on the matter last week after Republicans, including Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), dangled the idea of an Arabella subpoena.
But Schwalb also recently opened an investigation into tax-exempt organizations linked to Leo. It came after Campaign for Accountability, a "nonpartisan watchdog" helmed by left-wing activists, alleged in an April IRS complaint that the nonprofit groups Concord Fund, Rule of Law Trust, Wellspring Committee, 85 Fund, Federalist Society, Freedom and Opportunity Fund, and Marble Freedom Trust paid excessive compensation to Leo.
Campaign for Accountability, a former Hopewell Fund project, pocketed $450,000 in 2022 from New Venture Fund, tax forms show. That donation adds to the more than $2.3 million New Venture Fund wired between 2016 and 2021 to CFA, which has received hundreds of thousands of dollars from Open Society Foundations, the vast liberal grantmaking network bankrolled by Democratic megadonor and philanthropist George Soros.
In September, CFA joined over 40 "Supreme Court watchdog and accountability organizations" in sending a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts demanding he "ensure" Thomas and Alito recuse themselves from cases purportedly tied to conservative hedge fund manager Paul Singer and the right-libertarian Koch Network.
CFA Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith sits on the board of Fix the Court, a "transparency" Supreme Court watchdog that unwittingly leaked its donors, including New Venture Fund, to the Washington Examiner in May. Fix the Court, which was previously a project of New Venture Fund, admitted to failing to disclose lobbying after tax attorneys said in July that Fix the Court likely violated federal law.

Sen. Ted Cruz blasted the Left’s attacks on Federalist Society Board Co-Chairman Leonard Leo and other conservative friends of Supreme Court justices as an attempt to undermine the Constitution itself.
“From Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s court-packing scheme to the attacks on Justice Clarence Thomas, and from the smear tactics used to defame Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the libels against Leonard Leo, Democrats will stop at nothing to delegitimize the Supreme Court,” Cruz, R-Texas, told The Daily Signal in a statement Wednesday.
Leo, as co-chair of The Federalist Society’s board of directors, helps lead a premiere legal organization advocating for an originalist and textualist interpretation of the Constitution.
Former President Donald Trump consulted with The Federalist Society to select his Supreme Court nominees.
“See these Democrat attacks for what they are—a full-on assault on our Constitution,” Cruz added. “Democrats hate our system of separation of powers, and they are willing to burn down the Supreme Court to accomplish their goals.”
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., announced Monday that the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote to authorize issuing subpoenas to Leo and wealthy Republican donors Harlan Crow and Robin Arkley II.
Crow has provided flights and lodge stays for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and Arkley has hosted Justice Samuel Alito and Leo at his own lodge.
Durbin, who chairs the committee, and Whitehouse, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights, condemned Supreme Court justices for purportedly accepting “lavish, undisclosed gifts” and thereby enabling “their wealthy benefactors and other individuals with business before the court to gain private access to the justices.”
“The Supreme Court is in an ethical crisis of its own making,” the Democrats said.
“Thanks to investigative reporting, we now know that for decades, some justices have been joining billionaires with business before the Court on their private planes and yachts or receiving gifts such as private school tuition for a family member.”
Durbin and Whitehouse referred to a series of articles “exposing” the personal relationships between Supreme Court justices and conservative leaders like Leo.
The opening salvo, ProPublica’s article about Thomas’ failure to disclose a transaction with Crow, a billionaire real estate tycoon, exaggerated Thomas’ mistake, which the justice went on to correct.
The Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto noted that the left-leaning outlets running breathless “ethics” stories on the Supreme Court create a “heads-I-win, tails-you-lose” situation.
“If you follow the rules perfectly, ‘ethics experts’ will fault you for failing to disclose when it isn’t required and for what you disclose when it is,” Taranto noted.

Critics have noted that the ethics attacks appear to be an orchestrated campaign to undermine the court as it moves in an originalist direction.
Pro-abortion activists opposed the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022), which struck down Roe v. Wade (1973) and allowed states to make their own laws on abortion.
LGBTQ campaigners have demonized the court’s rulings upholding free speech and religious freedom in cases where Christians have refused to grant their artistic support to celebrate same-sex weddings.
After Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election, Democrats in the House and Senate drafted legislation to appoint new Supreme Court justices.
Biden created a presidential commission on the court to analyze judicial reform, but that effort appears not to be headed toward any concrete changes.
In lieu of structural changes to the Supreme Court, it seems many on the Left have resorted to attacking the court’s current members by insinuating impropriety without highlighting any clear quid pro quos.
Critics, among them Cruz, claim that Democrats’ real concern isn’t with corruption but with the court’s rulings on hot-button issues like abortion.
Yet those rulings are rooted in constitutional principles. Dobbs, for example, did not amend the Constitution to repeal a right to abortion.
Rather, in that case, the court concluded that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and that the Constitution does not bar state laws on abortion.
By contrast, previous Supreme Court majorities twisted the Constitution to find new rights, such as the Roe right to abortion, where they do not exist in the plain text of the document, originalists claim.
The Left revolted against the court when it abandoned this practice in favor of dedication to the original public meaning of the Constitution, originalists say.
As such, by insinuating corruption on the Supreme Court, the Left is undermining not only the justices appointed by Republican presidents such as Donald Trump, but the Constitution itself, Cruz says.

I believe it is a major psyop and from what I can tell, it or they or whatever or whoever is “running this op” has done a major disservice.
What I see are a bunch of people sitting and waiting for something to happen instead of doing what I have been calling for now for quite some time (LOCAL ACTION).
The nonsense about trump is still the president and the military is coming to the rescue is just that…nonsense.
I wasn’t belittling Dave (he’s a big boy), I was being brutally honest (like it or not or believe it or not).
Rome is burning Nero and the bucket brigade is getting low on water.
And like it or not (I don’t), we have a person in the WH that is there following a constitutional process…note I didn’t say fair election (which I don’t believe occurred).

Rebuffed by Vatican, Pompeo Assails China and Aligns With Pope’s Critics
Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”
An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.
“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.
But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.
Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.
Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

An interview with Milton P. Siegel
"This interview with Professor Milton P. Siegel, who for 24 years was the Assistant Director General of the World Health Organization, was recorded in 1992 by Dr. Stephen D. Mumford, President of the Center for Research on Population and Security. This is the first time that it has been made available to the public.
Because of his position and the length of his tenure, Professor Siegel is considered among the world's foremost authorities on the development of World Health Organization policy. In this interview, he reveals the influence of the Vatican in shaping WHO policy, particularly in blocking adoption of the concept that overpopulation is a grave public-health threat – a concept which, in WHO's early years, enjoyed a broad consensus among member countries.
Without this separation of population dynamics from WHO public-health policy, the Vatican would have found it much more difficult to subsequently manipulate governments on such issues as family planning and abortion. National leaders would have been able to refer to the international consensus, as demonstrated by WHO policy. WHO, they could have insisted, has determined that family planning and abortion – like clean water, good nutrition, and immunizations – are necessary to protect public health.
Professor Siegel decided to speak out on the subject. As he was involved in the WHO at an early stage, his personal experience provides ample evidence that the Vatican influenced WHO policy development from the outset, during the early period of the Interim Commission in 1946. In its 63-year history, this international health body has had a deplorable record in family planning. Its commitment has been minuscule, and even today family planning accounts for only a tiny fraction of its budget.
Professor Siegel joined the World Health Organization in 1946, when it was still in its formative stages – under the umbrella of the United Nations, created just the year before. Because of his earlier work in North America and the Middle East, he was asked, in effect, to be one of WHO's "founding fathers". So he came on board on the senior staff of the Interim Commission. Dr. Brock Chisholm of Canada was the Executive Director of the Commission, which set up the permanent organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Chisholm was chosen to be WHO's first Director General."
