Harnwell: Putin launches his largest airstrike on Ukraine since the beginning of the war. Why now?!

3:23

The West and Russia are at stalemate in Ukraine, but time tilts strongly in favour of Russia as the West succumbs to Ukraine Fatigue. Why then would Putin risk re-energising NATO by deliberately flying missiles over Poland?

Because the provocation is the point. Putin is weighing the West’s resolve, so as to decide his most favourable terms at the negotiating table.

Will the West respond in kind and fly missiles over Russia, setting off an escalatory tit-for-tat — or will we pretend we didn’t see anything and concentrate on our domestic economies and 2024’s elections in the US, the EU and the UK?

Kiev used banned weapons in attack on Russian city – Defense Ministry

Ukraine used rockets equipped with cluster bomb warheads to attack Belgorod, officials have said

Kiev employedrockets carrying cluster bomb warheadsin its strike against the Russian bordercity of Belgorod, the Russian Defense Ministry stated on Saturday, calling the attack a ”crime.” This type of weapon has been banned by more than 110 nations under a UN convention back dating back to 2008 due to the extreme danger it poses to civilians. Its use in densely populated areas can lead to devastating consequences.

The “Kiev regime” used several multiple rocket launchersto hit the city earlier onSaturday, the ministry said in a statement on Telegram. One of them was a Ukrainian Olkha system, which is capable of firing 12 guided rockets in one barrage, hitting targets at a maximum range of 70 to 130 kilometers depending on the type of system. The Olkha rockets were equipped with cluster bomb warheads, the ministry claimed.

Another system which was used, according to the Russian military, was theCzech-made RM-70 Vampire– an upgraded heavier version of the Soviet BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launcher.

Russian air defenses intercepted most of the projectiles, butseveral managed to hit the city, the ministry said. It added that “in case of a direct hit by Olkha missiles equipped with cluster munitions… the consequences would be immeasurably more severe.”

Earlier, the Russian Emergencies Ministry said that thestrike claimed the lives of 14 people, including two children, and left 108 people, among them 15 children, injured.

The Russian military accused Kiev of seeking to draw public attention away from its failures on the front line, as well as provoking Moscow into retaliatory strikes of a similar nature. The ministry maintained thatRussia only strikes military targets and infrastructurethat is directly relevant to these military facilities.

“This crime will not go unpunished,” the military said.

Zelensky should resign – ex-presidential aide

The Ukrainian leader is showing “absolute helplessness,” Oleg Soskin has said

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov should quit their posts due to the setbacks suffered by the country in the conflict with Russia, Oleg Soskin, who served as an aide to two Ukrainian heads of state, has said.

Ukraine needs new leadership that will be able to save the country, Soskin insisted in a clip published on his YouTube channel on Friday.

“Umerov should resign as minister of defense. These are his actions; it’s him who said that they would take Crimea and that sort of thing. Zelensky should also resign because he’s showing absolute helplessness. He turned out to be completely helpless,” he stated.

The former presidential aide pointed to the fact that the Ukrainian military said that it had shot down 27 drones and 87 cruise missiles out of the 158 projectiles fired by Russia during its large-scale air attack on Thursday and Friday. Kiev had previously claimed to have a much higher rate of interception of Russian projectiles.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow insisted that allintended targets, including defense industry sites, military airfields, arms depots, and positions of Ukrainian troops, were successfully hit.

“Since you can’t resist [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, since there’s no money, no weapons, no nothing, no people then you must negotiate, sign a ceasefire agreement[with Russia], but without recognizing the loss of the territories,” Soskin, who served as an aide to Ukrainian presidents Leonid Kravchuk in 1992 and 1993, and Leonid Kuchma between 1998 and 2000, said.

After that, an election should be held in order “to find those who will be more successful” in running the country, he said. “Ukraine will soon cease to exist” if the likes of Zelensky and his associates remain in power, the former aide warned.

Zelensky announced in late November that Kiev's forces would switch from attacking to building fortifications, acknowledging that the counteroffensive, which began in early June and aimed to cut Russia’s land bridge to Crimea, had ended without success. According to Russian estimates, Ukraine lost over 125,000 troops and 16,000 pieces of heavy equipment in its failed attempts to advance.

The flow of Western aid to Kiev has also subsided sharply in recent months. In the US, Republican lawmakers are resisting attempts by the administration of President Joe Biden to push through another $60 billion in assistance for Kiev, while Hungary has vetoed the EU’s planned four-year €50 billion ($55 billion) aid package for Ukraine.

(Now the leaders in Kiev are angry about this mess. I have a feeling that with the next attack from Russia, somehow it will find its way to wherever Zelensky is holed up, to blame Russia). He hasn’t been back to Ukraine for months, apparently realizing the leadership there will take him out. One way or another he will be gone, but Ukraine will laud him as a hero and not the ruthless corrupt dictator he is.)

US pushing G7 to confiscate Russian assets – FT

Washington reportedly wants to come up with a plan in time for the group's February summit

The United States has called for working groups from the Group of Seven (G7) countries to explore ways to confiscate hundreds of billions of dollars in frozen Russian assets, the Financial Times reported this week.

The United States, backed by the UK, Japan and Canada, has proposed setting up preparatory work forexpropriating over $300 billion in Russian foreign exchange reservesthat were immobilized by Western nations after the start of the Ukraine conflict.

Washington wants to consider options for the confiscation at a G7 leaders’ meeting around February 24 next year, according to the outlet. Discussions on how to develop a policy regarding Russian funds, and what risks are involved, were reportedly held in December by G7 finance ministers and their deputies.

“The three working groups proposed by Washington would examine the legal issues around confiscation; the method of applying such a policy and mitigating risks; and options for how to best channel the support to Ukraine,” the FT wrote.

While no final decisions have been taken and the issue remains highly debated in the EU, the acceleration of work to seize Moscow's assets and use them to help Ukraine highlights its “rising importance” for the West, the outlet noted.

Debates are ongoing on the details, and whether the frozen funds would be sent directly to Ukraine – notorious for its corruption – or used in some other way, like tapping the proceeds from the blocked assets or using them as collateral for loans.

The US has not publicly supported the takeover of Russian assets. However, according to the FT, Washington has “privately circulated a discussion paper this year within the G7 suggesting seizures of Moscow's frozen assets would be lawful as 'a countermeasure to induce Russia to end its aggression.”

The European Union has so far stopped short of seizing Russian money, instead seeking ways to tap profits generated from the frozen funds.

At the same time, the EU, where most of the assets are blocked, is more wary of a direct confiscation, fearing possible retaliation from Moscow if the money is taken.

Currently, €210 billion ($230 billion) of Russia's reserves are held in the bloc's financial institutions, with €191 billion in Belgium, €19 billion in France, and €7.8 billion in non-member Switzerland.

France, Germany, and Italy, which take over the G7 presidency in 2024, remain highly cautious about the idea, and have expressed reservations, urging to carefully assess the legality of confiscating Moscow's assets before a decision is taken.

(Money launderer in Chief is trying to convince the G7 to break international law and steal and launder the money of Russia! So they will all be publicly money laundering, instead of privately.)
