Hamas fired at least 27 rockets at the south and center of Israel in a barrage timed for midnight as Israelis celebrated the start of the new year.

According to The Times of Israel, the Palestinian resistance movement launched 27 missiles. Air defense systems intercepted 18, while nine fell in open areas. Loud explosions from the intercepts boomed through the sky over Tel Aviv, where crowds of partiers celebrated the new year Sunday.

The Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack from Gaza in a video published on social media, saying it had fired M90 rockets in "response to the massacres of civilians" carried out by Israel.

On Christmas Eve, Israel dropped a massive bomb on the Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza, killing 68 Palestinians. Days later, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken used emergency authority to bypass the US Congress to send $104 million in additional 155 mm artillery shells to Israel.

AFP reported on New Year’s Day that in the besieged Gaza Strip, 20-year-old Hamdan Abu Arab said he hoped "2024 will be better".

"We used to go out and enjoy our time on the last day of the year," he recalled. "But this New Year's Eve, there are only missiles and the remains of people." Continue…

A new study reports that brain function can be impaired for 18 months after a person has recovered from COVID-19, especially if the individual was hospitalized. However, COVID-induced cognitive impairment is no more severe than impairment due to other diseases causing hospitalization.

The prospective cohort study, published in JAMA Network Open, suggests that the brain health of COVID-19 patients who were ill enough to go to the hospital suffered long-lasting neurological damage that included new psychiatric diagnoses, such as anxiety and depression, fatigue, and sleep issues. Previous studies showed these symptoms occurred among 12 percent to 50 percent of individuals one year after infection. Consistent with these findings, this study found that about 38 percent of study participants still had cognitive symptoms at the 18-month follow-up.

The results offer insight into long-COVID symptoms and how the virus can affect the brain over time. Although fewer people are being hospitalized for COVID-19, just over 20,000 Americans were hospitalized for the virus during the last week of December.

Just as 2024 begins, Japan is rocked by a powerful earthquake, triggering a major tsunami warning and evacuation orders for areas in the western parts of the Pacific island country.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) and 42 kilometers (26 miles) northeast of Anamizu in Ishikawa prefecture around 1610 local time.

The 7.5 magnitude was weaker than the 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan in 2011, causing a tsunami and a nuclear power plant meltdown and killing thousands. Initial reports say tsunami waves of around 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) were recorded in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa prefecture.

An official from Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency told The New York Times that radioactive monitoring stations at the Shika nuclear power plant in Ishikawa show no irregularities. Several power plants in the region have been shuttered as authorities check on nuclear reactors.

Blinken Again Bypasses US Congress To Send Munitions To Israel

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken used emergency authority to approve the sale of $147.5 million of 155 mm artillery shells to Israel on Saturday, bypassing the standard congressional review for arms sales for the second time since the start of the war on Gaza.

A State Department spokesman said on Friday that "given the urgency of Israel’s defensive needs, the secretary notified Congress that he had exercised his delegated authority to determine an emergency existed necessitating the immediate approval of the transfer."

Earlier this month, Blinken used the same emergency process to approve the sale of 14,000 tank shells, worth more than $106 million, to Israel. The emergency sale of artillery shells comes as Israel’s military intensifies its bombing campaign in Gaza.

Earlier this week, on Christmas Eve, Israeli forces bombed the Meghazi camp, killing 86 Palestinians in one strike. Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy excused the death toll by telling Sky News the army had used an "incorrect munition."

But he refused to apologize for the loss of life and did not say what type of munition was used, despite being pressed several times by Sky News presenter Niall Paterson.

Israel has regularly used 2,000 lb US-made bombs to target residential neighborhoods in Gaza.

Continued instances of this sort cast doubt on the sincerity of the White House’s rhetoric calling for Israel to refrain from killing Palestinian civilians in such huge numbers.

Josh Paul, a former State Department arms expert who resigned in protest in October, told The Washington Post that Blinken’s decision to rush these unguided munitions enables Israel to continue the type of operations in Gaza that have "led to so many Palestinian civilian deaths."

"This is shameful, craven, and should frankly turn the stomach of any decent human being," he said. A Washington Post analysis found that Israel’s war against Gaza has been more devastating than any other 21st-century conflict.

International outrage continues in response to the Israeli bombing campaign, with South Africa invoking the Genocide Convention at the International Court of Justice the same day Blinken approved the additional weapons sale.

London has reportedly drafted a “final warning” to the Yemeni militants, which may be followed by airstrikes

Britain is preparing to launch airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi militants in response to a wave of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, The Times reported on Sunday. The US and another European country will also take part in the strikes, the newspaper claimed.

London and Washington are expected to release a joint statement later on Sunday, warning the Houthis to immediately cease their attacks or face military action from the West. The message is intended as a “final warning,” a British government source told the newspaper.

Should the Yemeni fighters fail to heed the warning, British and American ships and war planes will launch missiles at “pre-planned” targets in Yemen itself and on the Red Sea, The Times reported, adding that an unnamed “European country” will “possibly” join the operation too.

The Houthis, who control a large part of Yemen’s territory, have attacked dozens of container ships in the Red Sea since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in October in a bid to drive freight traffic away from the Jewish state and disrupt global supply chains for as long as Israel’s military campaign continues. The numbers are drawn from police crime statistics, which reveal more than 8,590 reported cases of rape and sexual assault by migrants. Over 90 percent of victims of sexual crimes are female.

Migrants are wildly over-represented in the rape statistics in the nation, given that they only account for 2.5 percent of the population.For example, there were almost 12,000 reported cases of rape or sexual assault in 2022, with around 10,000 identified suspects, 3,679 being non-German, and recent migrants accounting for at least 1,155 of those — an 11.5 percent rate.

Migrants from Syria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are named as particularly notable in these statistics. The United States has now surpassed Germany’s intake in 2015 through its own southern border crisis, as a percentage of total population.

A new Nanos poll has revealed that over half of Canadians say their personal finances are worse off today than they were in 2015, when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first took office.

In 2015, Trudeau ran on an election campaign promise to “help the middle class and those aspiring to join it.”

However in 2023, with the high cost of living, inflation and interest-rate hikes, millions of indebted Canadians said that they will be voting with these issues being their top priority.

The polls saw 53% of respondents saying that their personal finances are worse now than they were eight years ago.

The poll, conducted by Nanos Research on behalf of Bloomberg News, found that only 24% of respondents said that they were better off financially today than in 2015, while the remaining 21% said that there had been no change in their finances.

Respondents aged 35 to 54 years old were the most likely to be taking a negative hit financially, with 61% of that cohort saying that they were now worse off. Continue…

A $500-million dollar class-action lawsuit filed by two former migrant farm workers alleges the government of Canada’s foreign farm worker program is “racist.”

In the 1950s, Canadian government officials briefly considered making migrant farm workers work for a specific employer, however they later rejected the notion because they said it would be akin to slavery.

“It would be contrary to the whole Canadian belief in freedom of the individual,” said then-immigration minister Walter Harris.

However in 1966, the government allowed guaranteed work permits for particular employers, allowing for what would become known as “tied employment.”

Prior to the change, the majority of workers came from Europe. Later, migrant workers began coming predominantly from the Caribbean.

Now a $500-million class-action lawsuit has been filed against the federal government on behalf of migrant farm workers who have been working in Canada for the last 15 years. “Tied employment” is among the claims.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Monday an out of control lithium-ion battery fire on a cargo ship is out after days of burning off the coast of Alaska.

The vessel is now heading for Dutch Harbor, one of the nation’s busiest shipping ports.

AP reports the 19 crew members aboard the 410-foot cargo ship, Genius Star XI, were uninjured. Technicians from the Salvage and Marine Firefighting team remain on the ship to ensure the fire doesn’t return, according to a U.S. Coast Guard press release.

“This protected anchorage … will allow the vessel to remain stable, minimizing risk of any re-flash of the fire as we continue our response,” Capt. Chris Culpepper said in the press release, which said an investigation into the fire’s origins will begin once response efforts wrap up.

“The point is not that they are helping our enemy, but that they are our enemy. They are solving their own problems with [Ukraine’s] hands, that’s what it’s all about,” Putin stated.

The conflict between Moscow and Kiev was orchestrated by Western elites, who seek to defeat Russia, he suggested. However, the collective West has been unable to achieve its goals, with the failure already showing in the change of its rhetoric on the conflict, the president explained.

Those who only yesterday were talking about the need to inflict a ‘strategic defeat’ on Russia are now looking for words on how to quickly end the conflict.

Southern California was hit with a magnitude 4.1 earthquake on New Year’s Day.

While a 4.1 earthquake is small by California standards, residents in Los Angeles and Orange County were rattled by the temblor.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck about 12 miles south of Rancho Palos Verdes at 8:27 am on Monday.

Meanwhile, Japan rang in the new year with a massive 7.6 earthquake.

The 7.6 earthquake and dozens of aftershocks struck Honshu on Monday.

According to seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, the California quake and Japan’s temblor are completely unrelated.

“Completely unrelated to Japan, SoCal just had a M4.1 offshore from Palos Verdes. Not near any known fault. Way too small to even talk about tsunamis. Japan’s M7.5 is 100,000 times bigger than a M4.1,” Dr. Lucy Jones said on X.

No reports of damages or injury related to the California quake.

Earlier this year I traveled to report on the farmers protest in the Netherlands. Some 10 000 people turned out. One of the speakers supporting the farmers was none other than Geert Wilders. He recently won the election in the country.

But there’s more!

Tucker Carlson started the new year off by sharing a video of Jeffery Epstein’s brother, Mark, attempting to obtain a prehospital care report from the EMS members who removed his brother’s body from the prison cell.

In the video, Mark Epstein engages with an administrative clerk at the New York Fire Department, inquiring about the prehospital care report of his brother, Jeffery Epstein.

The clerk responded to Mark by saying Jeffery Epstein’s PCR report was not in the New York Fire Department’s database.
