when you're in a public place it's good to know what others might be intending so as to avoid those who would cold-clock you (either literally or metaphorically) and thus avoid being assaulted and/or injured.
when you are in a city on an empty street and someone starts beelining towards you, do you just let intersect your path or do you divert your path to avoid being mugged?

no one really ignores those around them without putting themselves in danger.
Anyone who attends to me I note 'huh, that person is noticing me. Why? What game are they up to?'
and by avoiding them I avoid their cray-cray way and keep myself from harm or it gives me an opportunity, if I sense that they are needing assistence, to help them.
what do you care what others think? the short answer: because you are wise and aware.
in another sense when someone is an obvious scold and/or accuser, I do agree, who cares what they think about . . .
but in terms of 'do they have neffarious plans directed at me'? I do care.
so to say 'what they think' you need to ask 'what about is it that they might be thinking?'
and if it's a plot to harm then I DO want to know enough to avoid their scheme, and also to possibly warn others who might not sense the danger from them.
