Is Facebook a publisher? In public it says no, but in court it says yes

 

In its defense against a former app startup, Facebook is contradicting its long-held claim to be simply a neutral platform

 

But in a small courtroom in California’s Redwood City on Monday, attorneys for the social media company presented a different message from the one executives have made to Congress, in interviews and in speeches: Facebook, they repeatedly argued, is a publisher, and a company that makes editorial decisions, which are protected by the first amendment.

 

The contradictory claim is Facebook’s latest tactic against a high-profile lawsuit, exposing a growing tension for the Silicon Valley corporation, which has long presented itself as neutral platform that does not have traditional journalistic responsibilities.

Sessions DOJ Declares ‘No Evidence’ Imran Awan Broke Law with Congress’s Computer Systems

 

The Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed a plea deal Tuesday to Imran Awan — former IT staffer for top House Democrats — which states the federal government found “no evidence” that Awan “violated federal law with respect to House computer systems.”

 

The offer includes dismissal of all charges against Awan’s wife, Hina Alvi, listed in an August-issued indictment. It expires at the end of the day.

 

Chris Gowen, Awan’s attorney, said last July that “ultra-right-wing-media” had victimized his client with an “anti-Muslim, right-wing smear job.”

Facebook Bug: Blocked Accounts Could Harass Users for 8 Days

 

A Facebook bug allowed blocked users to send messages to accounts which had blocked them for eight days, before the bug was fixed.

 

Over 800,000 users were affected by the bug, which Facebook admitted to on Monday.

 

“Starting today we are notifying over 800,000 users about a bug in Facebook and Messenger that unblocked some people they had blocked,” Facebook declared in a blog post. “The bug was active between May 29 and June 5 — and while someone who was unblocked could not see content shared with friends, they could have seen things posted to a wider audience.”
