This is what happened. Nobody in the ancient world knew the world was round yet because we weren't that intelligent about geography until people started making maps like Christopher Columbus discovering the Americas and later on advanced tech.
The best they could do in the ancient world is get someone to go up to the top of a mountain where they would be able to observe what everyone else was able to observe, a 360 degree view which gave them the idea of the world being like a disc.
