Also, I'm not sure if these were answered completely or if I'm right, but:

All this is way over my head, but my thought was "a" is in "an" twice, because "an" is just an expression of "a". A sort of additional modifier, not something that exists separate form "a".

 

"an" is "a" as ____

 

That is why, functionally, "a" and "an" are the same; one is just a modified (doubled) expression of the original.

 

Interesting in that they mean the exact same thing, perform the same function, but still appear different.

Which would mean that "n" first appeared in "a" since "n" is "a', but just expressed differently to change the appearance of.

 

Also, another interesting thought:

 

the modification is not for the benefit of "a", but for what comes after "a".
