In March 1989, a surreal fax arrived in the California offices of Atari Games. Howard Lincoln urges this edition to cease production tetris cartridges for the NES, the rights to these now belong to Nintendo! A panicked call is made to Microsoft to try to sort out the situation. Jim Mackonochie is reassuring: all rights to Tetris do indeed belong to Mirrorsoft and no other company.
But faced with Nintendo's firmness, Mackonochie refers to Kevin Maxwell, who oversees the activities audiovisual assets of the group. The latter decides to inform his father, Robert, the publishing magnate takes the situation very seriously and asks the government British government to intervene with the Russian government.
The affair will take on proportions such that Robert Maxwell, during a meeting with Gorbachev in Moscow with a view to discussing the establishment of stores zines in Russia, goes so far as to mention Tetris and ask to the Russian president for the contract with Nintendo! But Elore easily resists official pressure, especially since the new agreement with the Japanese company is substantially more profitable than that established with Microsoft.
<Maxwell pressured Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to cancel the contract between Elorg and Nintendo concerning the rights to the game Tetris, as he believed that his software company Mirrorsoft already owned the rights.[87]
