ya know, raising a child I'm starting to notice something. he can't focus. he doesn't understand the importance of good work and honesty. he has no fears. he has no worries. he doesn't care. what is it that we were taught at that young age that got us to focus? long time ago kids used to get punished for slacking off. at the very least they'd get the back of their hand slapped, usually with a ruler, by a teacher or principle. that'd get the kids to focus, right? What is it about getting smacked on the back of the hand that got us to focus?

well it lets our brain know that there's a danger in not focusing or paying attention. it triggers the fight-or-flight mode just a little, telling our amygdalas it needs to focus on work. interesting.
