Rex Heuermann, suspect in Gilgo Beach serial killings, expected to be charged in 4th murder, sources say
Heuermann, 60, was arrested in July 2023 and charged in the slayings of three women — Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello — whose remains were found near Gilgo Beach, on the south shore of Long Island, in December 2010.
Suffolk County prosecutors had previously said he is the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, whose remains were also found in the Gilgo beach area.

As House tees up contempt vote, Hunter Biden legal team questions validity of subpoena
A lawyer for the president’s son doubles down on their offer to publicly testify and says a Trump-era legal opinion invalidates the previous subpoena
In a letter sent to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) Friday, attorney Abbe Lowell argued that on the basis of a 2020 legal opinion issued by then-Attorney General William P. Barr, the subpoenas issued to Hunter Biden on Nov. 8 and 9, 2023, are invalid, as they were issued before the authorization of an impeachment inquiry against President Biden by a full House vote that followed in December. Lowell went on to write that if lawmakers issue a “new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition,” according to the letter provided to The Washington Post.
The offer proposed by Lowell, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly, is in line with the proposal discussed earlier this week by lawmakers during a House Judiciary hearing, in which Hunter Biden would appear for a public hearing under the rules of a deposition. Republican lawmakers on the Judiciary Committee rejected the concession and ultimately advanced the contempt resolution for violating a subpoena seeking his closed-door testimony. GOP lawmakers on the Oversight Committee followed suit, voting along party lines after a contentious session where Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance — essentially daring lawmakers to invite him to publicly testify on the spot.

Why do domain names sometimes end with a dot?
Hello! When I was writing the zine How DNS Works earlier this year, someone asked me – why do people sometimes put a dot at the end of a domain name? For example, if you look up the IP for example.com by running dig example.com, you’ll see this:
$ dig example.com
example.com. 5678 IN A 93.184.216.34
dig has put a . to the end of example.com – now it’s example.com.! What’s up with that?
Also, some DNS tools require domains to have a "." at the end: if you try to pass example.com to miekg/dns, like this, it’ll fail:
// trying to send this message will return an error
m := new(dns.Msg)
m.SetQuestion("example.com", dns.TypeA)
Originally I thought I knew the answer to this (“uh, the dot at the end means the domain is fully qualified?“). And that’s true – a fully qualified domain name is a domain with a “.” at the end!
But that doesn’t explain why dots at the end are useful or important.
in a DNS request/response, domain names don’t have a trailing “.”

New Bat Virus Discovered Amidst Rising Global COVID-19 Cases
In a startling revelation, a potentially infectious bat virus has been unearthed in a Thai cave, a location frequented by local farmers for bat feces used in fertilization. The discovery was reported by Dr. Peter Daszak of the non-profit organization, EcoHealth Alliance, a group previously associated with research activities in Wuhan. This newly discovered virus, yet to be named, is considered a potential zoonotic pathogen, owing to its presence in bats and the recurring human exposure to bat feces in the vicinity.
Unveiling the New Virus
While the world continues to grapple with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the emergence of this novel virus has sparked renewed concerns. Dr. Daszak, the head of the New York-based EcoHealth Alliance, stated that the newly identified virus is closely related to Covid-19 and possesses almost an equivalent potential of infecting humans. The precise implications of this development remain to be fully understood, but it serves as a stark reminder of the persistent risk of zoonotic diseases and the importance of vigilant monitoring.
Global Surge in Coronavirus Cases
This unsettling discovery coincides with a worldwide escalation in coronavirus cases, highlighted by a significant 42% increase in hospitalizations across 50 nations. The rising caseload is partly attributed to the spread of the JN.1 Covid variant, which was first identified in France in September of the previous year. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified this variant as a ‘variant of interest’ and labelled it as posing a ‘low’ global public health risk. However, it is responsible for a substantial proportion of new infections.
The Role of JN.1 Variant
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that the JN.1 variant accounted for a staggering 60% of new cases in early January. Initially, JN.1 was a part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, categorized as a ‘variant of interest.’ However, the WHO subsequently reclassified it as a separate entity, acknowledging its distinct impact on the global health landscape.

45,000 pregnant, 68,000 lactating women in Gaza face death
UNFPA announced Dec. 17, that 45,000 pregnant and 68,000 lactating women in Gaza are at risk of anemia, bleeding and even death.
Health Ministry spokesman in Gaza, Ashraf al-Qudra, said in a Jan. 1 statement that due to not meeting the needs of 50,000 pregnant women in centers accommodating those displaced by attacks in the Gaza Strip, patients are facing inadequate nutrition and health problems.
Al-Qudra urgently called on UN-affiliated agencies to intervene to rescue children and pregnant women from the situation.

Biden claims message was ‘privately delivered’ to Iran after strikes on Houthi targets
US President Joe Biden claimed a message was “privately” delivered to Iran over its backing of Houthis targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
As he was heading to Camp David for the weekend, Biden was asked what message was being sent to Iran through a pair of attacks targeting dozens of facilities in Yemen controlled by the Tehran proxies, the New York Post reports.
“We delivered it privately and we’re confident we’re well prepared,” the president answered.

Commentary: Government Funding Is the Likely Culprit for Science’s Major Fraud Problem
President Biden’s 2024 budget includes over $210 billion directed toward federal research and development, an approximately $9 billion increase from 2023 funding. That might not sound particularly bad—after all, who doesn’t like science and innovation?
But, although seemingly noble, the billions pumped into the US government’s National Science Foundation don’t always translate into finding cures for debilitating diseases, or developing groundbreaking technologies.
In recent years, although technology and peer-review techniques have become more widespread, fraud has remained a consistent issue. The problem has gotten so out of hand that world-class researchers and medical ethics analysts believe the public should be aware of the widespread inaccuracies plaguing medicine.

A defiant Netanyahu says no one can halt Israel’s war to crush Hamas, including the world court
The Gaza Health Ministry said Saturday that 135 Palestinians had been killed in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall toll of the war to 23,843. The count does not differentiate between combatants and civilians, but the ministry has said about two-thirds of the dead are women and children. The ministry said the total number of war-wounded surpassed 60,000.

Former US officials to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday for post-election talks
Former U.S. National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley and former Deputy Secretary of State James B. Steinberg will arrive in Taipei on Sunday for post-election meetings with Taiwanese politicians, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taipei said.
Taiwan's Lai Ching-te, from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won Saturday's presidential poll by a comfortable margin, but with less than half the vote his party lost control of parliament.
Before the poll China called Lai a dangerous separatist.
Lai takes office on May 20.

A ‘cultural genocide’: Which of Gaza’s heritage sites have been destroyed?
Nearly 200 sites of historical importance have been destroyed or damaged in Israeli air raids on the Palestinian enclave in the past 100 days.
An ancient harbour dating back to 800 BC, a mosque that was home to rare manuscripts and one of the world’s oldest Christian monasteries are just a few of at least 195 heritage sites that have been destroyed or damaged since Israel’s war on Gaza began on October 7, according to an NGO documenting war damage on cultural sites.
Wiping out the cultural heritage of a people is one of the many war crimes South Africa alleges against Israel in a lawsuit that was heard this past week at the International Court of Justice. It states: “Israel has damaged and destroyed numerous centres of Palestinian learning and culture”, including libraries, religious sites and places of ancient historical importance.

Donald Trump's Legal Issues Grow with Order to Pay, Yet Hold Steady in the Polls
Donald Trump is ordered to pay again by the courts. A New York Court ordered Mr. Trump to pay nearly $400,000 in legal fees to The New York Times and three investigative reporters after he sued them unsuccessfully over a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2018 story about his family’s wealth and tax practices.
According to the Associated Press; the newspaper and reporters Susanne Craig, David Barstow and Russell Buettner were dismissed from the lawsuit in May. Trump’s claim against his estranged niece, Mary Trump, that she breached a prior settlement agreement by giving tax records to the reporters is still pending.
New York Judge Robert Reed said that given the “complexity of the issues” in the case and other factors, it was reasonable that Donald Trump be forced to pay lawyers for the Times and the reporters a total of $392,638 in legal fees.
Despite the continued losses in the courts Donald Trump appears to be holding steady in the polls.

Israeli newspaper calls Netanyahu ‘multifaceted master of failure’
TEL AVIV – The Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the eve of the 100th day of the war on Gaza, describing him as a “multifaceted master of failure.” The criticism extends to his performance in security, diplomacy, and the economy.
According to the newspaper, after these prolonged days of conflict, the government’s priority should be the return of Israeli prisoners from Gaza, even at the expense of a ceasefire and the overthrow of Hamas, Khaberni reported.
Haaretz emphasizes that the Israeli military remains entrenched in Gaza, and changing their terminology in the media does not alter this reality.

Two Navy SEALs are missing after Thursday night mission off coast of Somalia
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two U.S. Navy SEALs are missing after conducting a nighttime boarding mission Thursday off the coast of Somalia, according to three U.S. officials.
The SEALs were on an interdiction mission, climbing up a vessel when one got knocked off by high waves. Under their protocol, when one SEAL is overtaken the next jumps in after them.
Both SEALs are still missing. A search and rescue mission is underway and the waters in the Gulf of Aden, where they were operating, are warm, two of the U.S. officials said.
The U.S. Navy has conducted regular interdiction missions, where they have intercepted weapons on ships that were bound for Houthi-controlled Yemen.
The mission was not related to Operation Prosperity Guardian, the ongoing U.S. and international mission to provide protection to commercial vessels in the Red Sea, or the retaliatory strikes that the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted in Yemen over the past two days, the official said Saturday. It was also not related to the seizure of the oil tanker St. Nikolas by Iran, a third U.S. official said.
The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details that have not yet been made public.
Besides the defense of ships from launched drones and missiles shot from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the U.S. military has also come to the aid of commercial ships that have been the targets of piracy.
In a statement Saturday, U.S. Central Command said that search and rescue operations are currently ongoing to locate the two sailors. The command said it would not release additional information on the Thursday night incident until the personnel recovery mission is complete.
The sailors were forward-deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations supporting a wide variety of missions.

Police arrest Michigan man accused of planning to bomb Satanic Temple in Salem
SALEM, MASS. (WHDH) - A Grant, Michigan man is facing a criminal charge after police say he was planning to bomb the Satanic Temple in Salem, Massachusetts, officials announced Saturday.
Luke Isaac Terpstra, 30, of Grant, is facing a charge of explosives- possession of bombs with unlawful intent after investigators determined he was planning to target the temple, according to the Grant Police Department.
In a statement, Salem police wrote, “We have also learned that at some point in November, Terpstra traveled to Salem, possibly for planning purposes. There is currently no indication that he had local allies in Salem or that he acted with any accomplices. The City of Salem and the Salem Police Department recognize that it is frightening and concerning that there are individuals who would threaten or carry out violent attacks against others based on their beliefs and that we are a target. On the one hand it is gratifying that our federal and local partners were able to thwart Terpstra. On the other, it is terrifying that he walked in our midst planning such violence.”
The Salem Police Department says it will continue to patrol sensitive locations.

Why the Media Narrative on Donald Trump’s Legal Woes Is Wrong
Sometime this month, New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron will decide how much Donald Trump should pay in penalties in the fraud case brought by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. Engoron has already ruled that Trump did commit fraud, so now it’s just a matter of the money.
Meanwhile, as Engoron is deliberating, another trial is about to begin.

Israeli troops kill 4 gunmen at Lebanon border area: army
JERUSALEM: Israeli troops on Sunday killed four militants who crossed in from Lebanon at a disputed border area, the army said as tensions surge on the 100th day of the Israel-Hamas war.
Since Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip erupted on October 7, the Israel-Lebanon border has seen near-daily exchanges of fire between Iran-backed Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces.
The Israeli military said troops patrolling a contested border area “identified a terrorist cell who crossed from Lebanon into Israeli territory and fired at the forces.”
