Venezuela Imprisoned Americans

From May 4th, 2020 these file photo released by the Venezuelan Miraflores presidential press office … [+]Associated Press

''Correction: On December 19th, there were mistaken reports that former Green Berets Luke Denman and Airan Berry were being freed. On that day, according to sources in the Venezuelan government, they were taken on a medical check. It was on the following day that the two US citizens were finally freed, alongside eight others and multiple Venezuelan prisoners as well.

Please read the latest article on the issue: "Venezuela Prisoner Exchange: What Does It Mean?". Since the latest, correct information can be found there, the rest of the article has not been edited and remains in its original form.''

"The Venezuelan government released two U.S. citizens on Tuesday as part of a broader ongoing deal between Caracas and Washington, D.C. to normalize relations.

The two prisoners are former Green Berets Luke Denman and Airan Berry, who took part in a beach landing to attempt an overthrow of Venezuela’s government in 2020.

The prisoner release is part of a broad effort to bring Venezuela and western countries, especially the U.S., closer together after years of antagonism. Relations reached a breaking point under the Trump Administration’s “maximum pressure” policy, which aimed at removing President Nicolas Maduro from power."

On May 4, 2020, Denman and Berry landed with a group of former soldiers and mercenaries in the fishing village of Chuao. The operation failed, with eight dead and dozens captured. Former Green Beret Jordan Goudreau, owner of private security firm Silvercorp USA, said he organized the attack under promise of payment from the “interim government.”

Washington, D.C. and Caracas have been in discreet conversations throughout the Biden Administration, although they only picked up this year. In July, El Pais claimed that they were talking for months in Doha, Qatar.
