American computer scientist and founder of the Institute for Women and Technology Anita Borg was born today in Chicago, Illinois. Borg is responsible for the development of MECCA, an email system for communicating in virtual communities. Her experience running the Systers mailing list from women in tech led her to work in email communication. In 1999, President Clinton appointed Anita to the Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology. Borg’s was passionate about women working in technology. Her stated goal was 50% representation for women in computing by 2020 — something sadly yet to be achieved.
