And now, a twelve-year-old defamation lawsuit by climate activist professor Michael Mann against Mark Steyn and Rand Simberg has gotten underway in a D.C. courtroom.

Steyn is the conservative writer and spokesman who regularly substituted for Rush Limbaugh on his top-ranked radio program.

Simberg is a former science expert at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a conservative-leaning think tank in Washington, D.C.

The case has been languishing in pretrial motion practice for years and several prior defendants, including the National Review and the Competitive Enterprise Institute, are no longer in the case.

The Mann v. Steyn trial is scheduled to extend into February. But the biggest bombshell of the trial may have dropped on Wednesday, January 24.

An attorney for Simberg asked Dr. Mann how much Mann was paying for his attorneys and if Mann would have any legal debts from the case.

Michael Mann admitted that he hadn’t paid a penny for the several law firms representing him over the past 12 years or to the four lawyers (and several staff people) representing him at trial.

And Mann said he would have no legal debts from the case regardless of whether he won or lost.

The Department of Social Development stated in a recent briefing note that the nation’s poverty rate could increase by 14% this year due to high food prices.

The Canadian government’s own National Advisory Council on Poverty (NACP) observed in a recent update to the nation’s Parliament that fast-rising food costs in Canada have led to many people feeling a sense of “hopelessness and desperation” with nowhere to turn for help.

As noted by Blacklock’s Reporter, NACP stated last week in a report to Parliament that its coming 2024 spring figures regarding the poverty rate in Canada show it standing at 9.8 percent, affecting some four million Canadians, compared with a low of 6.4 in 2020.

A jury has awarded an additional $83.3 million to former advice columnist E. Jean Carroll, who says former President Donald Trump damaged her reputation by calling her a liar after she accused him of sexual assault.

The verdict was delivered Friday by a seven-man, two-woman jury in a trial regularly attended by Trump, who abruptly left the courtroom during closing arguments by Carroll’s lawyer, only to later return.

Carroll smiled as the verdict was read. By then, Trump had left the building in his motorcade.

It was the second time in nine months that a jury returned a verdict related to Carroll’s claim that a flirtatious, chance encounter with Trump in 1996 at a Bergdorf Goodman store ended violently. She said Trump slammed her against a dressing room wall, pulled down her tights and forced himself on her.

In May, a different jury awarded Carroll $5 million. It found Trump not liable for rape, but responsible for sexually abusing Carroll and then defaming her by claiming she made it up. He is appealing that award.

Trump skipped the first trial. He later expressed regret for not attending and insisted on testifying in the second trial, though the judge limited what he could say, ruling he had missed his chance to argue that he was innocent. Members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police can now have their sex-change surgeries and other “gender-affirming care” paid for through their “regular Member health benefits.”

“I am pleased to inform you that gender-affirming care benefit provisions have been added to regular Member health benefits,” reads a memo to officers in Canada’s national police force.

The memo was leaked to The Counter Signal, which says the benefit is worth $75,000. The memo says the goal of the new program is to advance the RCMP’s “ongoing commitment to creating a more modern, inclusive and representative workforce.”

“The benefit will be applicable for certain gender-affirming procedures not covered by provincial/territorial health care plans to help individuals with their gender affirmation journey,” according to the memo.

The money will not be automatic but subject to members being at least 18 years old, seeing a doctor for “gender affirmation,” being without access to applicable provincial health coverage, and having completed any relevant medical procedures a doctor or nurse might prescribe.

RCMP offices must submit a gender affirmation request form to secure pre-approval for the benefit.

Canada's medicare system is paid for in part by the federal government but governed by the provinces. Consequently, the amount of funding for “gender-affirming care,” including sex change operations, varies across the country

So-called "gender-affirming care" can refer to any procedure related to gender transition or sex change procedures, from the chemical castration of young boys to the genital mutilation of adults who have their organs removed or replaced.

Critics say the procedures do not provide medical care but lasting physiological and psychological harm. Those opting for sex change surgeries are also choosing a lifetime reliance on drugs.

The benefit is available retroactively to October 12, 2023 and brings the RCMP healthcare benefits to the same level as Canada’s public service.
