The German pastor, theologian, and martyr Dietrich Bonhoeffer reportedly said that “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

From the middle of the 1930s, Bonhoeffer was trying to wake the German Lutheran Church to the impending crisis that eventually resulted in the Holocaust. In fact, he spent his last couple of years trying to bring the German church to oppose the genocide. Bonhoeffer was hung by the Nazis about a month before the war ended.

Is Bonhoeffer’s warning relevant to Canada?

Many Canadians seem to believe that employees of the churches that managed most of the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) engaged in genocide against Indigenous children.

The Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Justice Murray Sinclair, told host Matt Galloway on the CBC radio program The Current that between 15,000 and 25,000 Indigenous children are missing from these schools. In Justice Sinclair’s mind, a genocide had taken place.

Even more damning, the House of Commons, including members of all political parties, passed a motion by NDP MP Leah Gazan that claimed that the IRS system was a genocide against Indigenous children.

Federal government paid out $210 million in bonuses last year

Federal managers and executives received huge bonuses almost across the board while Canadians struggle with a cost-of-living crisis.

Most departments in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's federal government gave out bonuses to over 90% of executives or management, with Trudeau's bureaucrats in the Privy Council Office receiving performance compensation at the highest rate of all departments, 97%.

The data was uncovered in a government response to an order paper inquiry posed by Conservative MP Eric Melillo. However, CBC did not answer the order paper question, so the state broadcaster's executive bonuses remain a mystery.

Despite plummeting viewership and 800 pre-Christmas layoffs at the state broadcaster, CBC CEO Catherine Tait would not rule out taking a performance bonus of her own during her appearance before the House of Commons' heritage committee.

Tait's annual salary is pegged between $458,500 and $539,400, and can expect a bonus each year of 28%.

However, the nature of resource distribution across regions remains uneven, posing challenges to the self-sufficiency of nations. Amidst this backdrop, Europe is an agricultural haven with its rich, fertile soils, relatively stable geology, and temperate climates. Such favourable conditions provide European farmers with the unique opportunity to cultivate a diverse array of grains, fruits, and vegetables. Moreover, Europe’s present commitment to a top-down initiative to install sustainable green policy farming practices throughout the Union, albeit with elements that are at odds with one another. For instance, conservation initiatives and eco-friendly approaches on the one hand with the expectation of more goods and economic value on the other.

Because of this, European countries find themselves perhaps intentionally battling between bureaucracy, legislation and national food sovereignty, leading many farmers to reach a crescendo in a public display of slow-moving rallies and muck spreading on the doors of government offices. "Imposing sanctions on Iraqi banks undermines and obstructs Central Bank efforts to stabilize the dollar exchange rate and reduce the selling gap between official and parallel rates," it added.

The Finance Committee affirmed its "rejection of these practices, due to their repercussions on the livelihoods of citizens," and reiterated its "call on the government and the Central Bank of Iraq to take quick measures against the dominance of the dollar, by diversifying cash reserves from foreign currencies."

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, announced the start of construction of a new nuclear power plant (NPP), which is in line with the country's initiative to upgrade nuclear energy generative capacity to 20,000 megawatts, Iranian state-run news agency IRNA reported on Thursday.

The Iran-Hormoz NPP with a capacity of 5,000 megawatts, will be built in Sirik city, located in the southern coastal province of Hormozgan, Eslami was cited as saying.

The project was given the green light by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi along with 157 other initiatives in the field of industry and energy.

Russia is currently building the second power unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant — the largest joint Russian-Iranian project — which is located in southeastern Iran along the Persian Gulf coast.

The first NPP unit, completed in cooperation with Russia, was connected to Iran's national power grid in September 2011, while a contract for the construction of the third power unit has already been signed.

The federal government has tabled legislation delaying the expansion of the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program, to people with mental illness by three years.

Health Minister Mark Holland and Justice Minister Arif Virani said that the delay to 2027 was introduced to allow time for a parliamentary review to take place.

A review to assess its state of readiness will take place in two years, they said.

The delay is in response to MPs and Senators on a special committee stating that Canada is not prepared to proceed with the expansion of the MAID program, following an examination of it.

Canada has joined a global group to cut fertilizer emissions.

Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay declared Canada as a “founding member” of the Efficient Fertilizer Consortium, an initiative spearheaded by the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research. Canada joins a group of 11 other nations, including the United States and United Kingdom.

In his announcement, MacAulay pledged approximately $1.3 million over four years to support the public-private partnership aimed at funding research to curtail fertilizer emissions globally.

“By joining the Efficient Fertilizer Consortium, we’re helping ensure that our farmers and producers are well-equipped to make informed decisions that are good for the environment and their bottom line,” said MacAulay.

“International collaboration is vitally important to addressing global food security and putting healthy and affordable food on tables right across Canada.”

Canada set a target in 2020 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with fertilizer use by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. However, questions have arisen regarding the feasibility of this target.

Mandate letters issued to Ontario cabinet ministers can remain confidential and are not subject to freedom of information requests, the Supreme Court has ruled.

The saga goes back to 2018 when a CBC journalist requested access through provincial freedom of information laws to the mandate letters Premier Doug Ford sent to cabinet ministers. Mandate letters are documents outlining ministerial priorities. Some governments opt to release them proactively, but the Ford government did not and fought against disclosure through the freedom of information process.

The Ford government claimed the letters were protected by cabinet confidence as they would reveal the “substance of deliberations.”

CBC appealed the refusal to disclose to the Information and Privacy Commissioner, which rejected the Ontario government’s characterization that the mandate letters were exempt from disclosure.

The decision by the privacy commissioner to order the release of the letters was upheld on judicial review and at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, but these decisions were overturned by Friday’s Supreme Court decision. Continue…

The Liberal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau budgeted $198.6 million on their federal workplace vaccine mandate even though 95 percent of staff were already vaccinated.

The Trudeau government budgeted more than $199 million to enforce COVID vaccine mandates on federal employees.

According to information published February 1 by Blacklock’s Reporter, the Liberal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau budegted $198.6 million on their COVID-era federal workplace vaccine mandate even though 95 percent of staff were already vaccinated.

“Total authorities available for the Policy on COVID-19 Vaccination for the core public administration including the RCMP were $85.7 million and $112.9 million in 2021 and 2022 respectively,” Treasury Board President Anita Anand wrote in an Inquiry of Ministry.

According to the Inquiry, the number also included $19.2 million for “procuring, warehousing and distributing COVID-19 rapid tests across the core public administration.”

“This allocation also included funding for legal services,” it added without further providing details.

Beginning November 2021, the Trudeau government mandated that a total of 275,983 employees from the RCMP, military and main federal departments provide proof of vaccination.

Those who failed to do so risked dismissal or suspension without pay. While there were provisions for medical and religious exemptions, these were rarely granted. According to internal information, at the time of the mandates 95 percent of employees had already received the COVID vaccine.

When the federal mandate was lifted in June 2022, 2,560 employees had been suspended without pay for refusing to show proof of vaccination.

Conservative Members of Parliament (MPs) questioned why the cost of the mandate was so high and pressed for details as to what the funds were used for.

“Treasury Board officials told us it was for rapid testing purchases and distribution,” Conservative MP Kelly McCauley (Edmonton West) told the House of Commons in 2021.

“The Treasury Board website shows there are about 3,400 unvaccinated employees,” he added. “That works out to about $24,000 per employee for rapid testing.”

“At $24,000 per employee, who is providing these rapid tests? Is it SNC-Lavalin?” McCauley questioned, referring to a bribery scandal involving the large Canadian engineering firm SNC-Lavalin and the Trudeau government. Continue…

A Pizza Hut in the small northern Ontario community of Timmins has gone viral after locals spotted what was almost certainly a typo on a notice posted to the front door.

The notice informing prospective customers that the restaurant would be closed for dine-in that evening said the decision was made due to "unforseen circumcisions," not "unforeseen circumstances," as is typically the case.
