US and UK announce new strikes on Houthis

The British military has joined the bombing of Yemen for the second time

American bombers struck Houthi installations in Yemen again on Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) has said. It is the second time British bombers have taken part in the operation, now known as ‘Poseidon Archer’.

Royal Air Force (RAF) jets based in Cyprus had been involved in the January 11 attack, while the US used cruise missiles and aircraft from the USS Eisenhower. Since then, the US has carried out six more strikes on its own, reportedly targeting Houthi missiles as they prepared to launch.

US and UK forces “conducted strikes on 8 Houthi targets” in Yemen just before midnight on Monday, CENTCOM said on X (formerly Twitter). “The targets included missile systems and launchers, air defense systems, radars, and deeply buried weapons storage facilities.”

According to CENTCOM, the strikes were carried out “alongside UK Armed Forces, and with the support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands.”

Although the countries named have all pledged to take part in the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian, aimed at ensuring the safety of international shipping, the US military insisted that the strikes were “separate and distinct from the multinational freedom of navigation” operation. Continue…

Hackers targeted Monobank, Ukraine's largest mobile-only bank, with waves of denial of service (DDoS) attacks on Jan. 21, the company's co-founder and CEO Oleh Horokhovskyi reported.

DDoS attacks direct excessive amounts of traffic at a website in order to overload its servers, often causing disruptions to service.

Horokhovskyi said Monobank was targeted with 580 million service requests in one attack.

Farmers blocked roads with tractors and trucks in several parts of France on Monday, continuing protests that they started last week, local media has reported.

The agricultural workers dumped rocks and gravel to make highway exits inaccessible near the city of Perpignan in the southwest of the country. Roads leading to the Golfech nuclear plant north of Toulouse were also shut down. The operator of the plant said it kept producing electricity despite the actions of the demonstrators.

The farmers said they had launched their protest due to high taxes on tractor fuel, cheap imports, price pressure from retailers, a shortage of water, and excessive red tape on both the national and EU levels.

The action by French farmers follows similar demonstrations by their German, Dutch, Polish and Romanian counterparts. Germany has seen the largest protests, which have decried not only EU regulations, but also a decision by Berlin to slash diesel subsidies worth €480 million ($520 million) for the sector. The government announced the move shortly after it said German support for Ukraine would double to €8 billion in 2024. And the article doesn’t stop at medical arguments. The hesitancy here is specifically linked with social media driven “misinformation.”

The recommendations don’t differ greatly from what those Big Tech social subsidiaries have been including for years in their policies – and these “guidelines” were probably cooked in the same kitchen, so to speak.

Things like, boosting the visibility of “reliable health information” and more “pro-action” on these platforms “in dealing with the proliferation of misinformation.”

First, the authors of the piece seek to define the way in which social media affects vaccination campaigns. The take is basically entirely negative – asserting that this effect amounts to misinformation only.

Powerful waves, driven by offshore storm surges, hit an important US military installation in the Marshall Islands on Saturday night, causing damage and resulting in the evacuation of all “non-mission personnel” from the island.

Flooding caused by the waves also hit two airports at Ailinglaplap Atoll, leaving rocks, coral and debris in their wake, keeping those airports closed for weeks. Other islands reported flooding and moderate damage.

The US Army in a statement on Sunday afternoon that at approximately 9pm on January 20, “a series of weather-induced waves hit Roi-Namur which caused significant flooding in the northern portions of the island”.

A video circulating from Roi-Namur, an island at the northern end of Kwajalein Atoll, shows an approximately one-metre wave hitting the Army’s dining hall, breaking down doors, knocking people down and washing them from outside into the facility.

Major M7.2 earthquake hits China – Fourth powerful quake within the last two days – Link to increased solar activity?

Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and the National Capital Region late this evening. The 7.2 magnitude quake has hit the southern part of China’s Xinjiang. There are no reports of any injury or destruction.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the National Center of Seismology said the quake occurred at a depth of 80 kilometres.

Mild tremors were last felt in Delhi and NCR on January 11 after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan. The epicentre of the quake was 241 kilometres northeast of Kabul. The tremors were felt even in Pakistan.

Earlier today, a massive quake struck a remote and mountainous part of southwestern China, in which 47 people got buried. More than 200 people were “urgently evacuated” from the area, reported State broadcaster CCTV.

The landslide took place at 5:51 am (2151 GMT Sunday) in Zhenxiong County, Yunnan province, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing local authorities.

According to one of the models employed by the federal data centre, the poverty rate is expected to climb to 10.2% in 2023, marking a significant increase from the estimated 7.4% in 2021.

The model suggests a steep trajectory, with a 21.8% rise from 2021 to 2022 and an additional 13.3% increase forecasted for the subsequent year. The official poverty rates for 2022 and 2023 have yet to be officially disclosed.

In a long-awaited decision, the Federal Court has ruled that the measures Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked under the Emergencies Act were unreasonable and unconstitutional.

The decision follows an application for judicial review launched by the Canadian Constitution Foundation, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and several other applicants in 2022 after the emergency measures were used to end the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa.

The measures controversially allowed the government to freeze the bank accounts of protesters, conscript tow truck drivers, and arrest people for participating in assemblies the government deemed illegal.

The court declared that the decision to issue the Proclamation and associated Regulations and Order was unreasonable and beyond the scope of the Emergencies Act. Continue…

A private members’ bill seeking to prevent minors from accessing online pornography has been stalled in Parliament as the federal government continues to oppose the legislation.

Liberal-appointed Senator Julie Miville-Dechêne, the author of the Bill S-210, claimed that Canada is lagging behind other countries on this issue, saying she is confused as to the reason for Liberals’ stance on the matter.

“The Liberal government’s opposition to Bill S-210 is puzzling, considering the bill is supported by all other parties in the House,” she said on Thursday. “It also contradicts earlier signals from the government. Most objections to S-210 are based on fear mongering and fallacies, and the issues of privacy and data security can be thoroughly addressed in regulations.”

“The Canadian government is going against the tide of countries and jurisdictions that are legislating to protect children from exposure to online pornography, including the European Union, the U.K., France, Germany, Spain,” added Miville-Dechêne.

A total of 15 Liberal MPs broke ranks with the government and voted in favour of the bill alongside the Conservatives, NDP and Bloc Québécois last month.

The bill, also known as the Protecting Young Persons From Exposure to Pornography Act, had been pushed towards its final stages in the Commons but the Liberals have withheld support.

According to the Heritage Minister’s office, the government plans to continue withholding support for the bill, citing privacy concerns.

Bill S-210 would require commercial websites that offer pornography to require users to verify that they are over the age of 18 years old to have access to the material.

The bill does now specify how this would be reliably accomplished however, leaving plans to make additional regulations in the future open to the government. Continue…

Foreign governments use “clandestine or coercive” activities to influence Canadian society to their benefit, warned the presentation.

CSIS found that Alberta is the most sought-after place to enact these activities because of its “resource rich and high-tech economy.”

On January 15, the Ontario government, headed by Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford, announced a $1.7 million grant to prevent hate-motivated crimes across the province, as part of a two-year program through the Safer and Vital Communities (SVC) Grant.

“Acts that incite hatred, fear and intimidation have no place in our communities,” Solicitor General Michael Kerzner said in a press release.

“That is why our government is making additional investments to help combat the rise in hate crime and support community-based organizations that are working to address the root causes of hate in all its forms,” he added.

According to Sarkonak’s analysis, the “toolkit” presents a “comically false framing of biological sex,” overcomplicating the matter and then asserting that the “gender binary,” i.e., the fact there are only men and women, “is a colonial and white supremacist structure rather than a natural and indisputable truth.”

The Russian Ministry of Defence released a statement about the incident:

"An Il-76 plane crashed in the Belgorod region at around 11 a.m. on January 24 while on a scheduled flight. It was transporting 65 captive servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to the Belgorod region for an exchange, in addition to six crewmembers and three accompanying persons."

Bloomberg cited Andrey Kartapolov, head of the Defence Committee of the State Duma of Russia, who told the lower house of parliament that Ukraine downed the transport plane using either the US Patriot system or German-made IRIS-T.

The ministry also said the Russian Aerospace Forces is responding and has been sent to the incident area to investigate the cause of the crash.

Russain news agency Interfax said President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, declined to comment on the crash, telling journalists that the information was still "too fresh."

This comes as Ukraine and Russia exchanged nearly 500 prisoners earlier this month, the largest swap since the early days of the war.

He explained that petrol-burning vehicles and hybrids, along with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, will dominate.

Toyoda made the point: How can EVs be the future when a billion people on Earth have no electricity?

Data from Statista shows nearly a billion people in the world are living without electricity.

He noted: "Customers — not regulations or politics — should make that decision."

Over the years, Toyota has openly demonstrated defiance against governments and NGOs pushing for 100% EVs in just a few decades, if not earlier.

In October, Toyoda told reporters at an auto show in Japan that EVs aren't the silver bullet against the supposed ills of carbon emissions they're often made out to be.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for an “urgent” vaccine campaign to combat measles outbreaks across Europe, after registering over 42,000 infections last year.

The agency’s European branch sounded alarms over the surge in cases in a press release published on Tuesday, noting that Kazakhstan has been among the hardest-hit nations.

“As in other countries of the region, the virus is spreading rapidly and the outbreak is attributed largely to an accumulation of susceptible children who missed routine immunization doses during the Covid-19 pandemic; 65% of the reported measles cases in Kazakhstan have been children under 5 years of age,” the statement said, adding that the Kazakh authorities were implementing “extensive outbreak response measures,” including a major vaccination campaign.

WHO Europe went on to note that more than 42,000 measles cases had been registered across 41 countries in 2023 – a massive increase over the 941 cases reported in all of 2022.

Multiple gunshots rang out at Edmonton’s City Hall on Tuesday morning and a Molotov cocktail was thrown inside leading to the immediate evacuation of the building.

Around 11:00 am the Edmonton Police Services posted on X that they were investigating a weapons complaint at city hall. The police confirmed that one person had been arrested and that roadways in the area had been closed. They asked residents to stay away.

Bank of Canada keeps interest rate at 5% in first 2024 announcement

The Bank of Canada announced that it would hold its overnight rate at 5% on Wednesday.

The announcement marks the fourth consecutive decision to keep the rate steady at 5% since July 2023.

Governor Tiff Macklem told reporters that discussions at the Bank of Canada have shifted from whether its key policy rate is high enough to how long it needs to maintain it at 5%.

“What came through in the deliberations is that Governing Council’s discussion about future policy is shifting from whether monetary policy is restrictive enough to how long to maintain the current restrictive stance,” said Macklem.

The central bank said it anticipates economic growth will continue to slow, helping inflation to gradually ease across a number of economies. Consumer spending and business investment are also expected to continue to slow this year.

“In the euro area, the economy looks to be in a mild contraction. In China, low consumer confidence and policy uncertainty will likely restrain activity. Meanwhile, oil prices are about $10 per barrel lower than was assumed in the October Monetary Policy Report (MPR). Financial conditions have eased, largely reversing the tightening that occurred last autumn,” reads a statement from the Bank of Canada.

“The Bank now forecasts global GDP growth of 2½% in 2024 and 2¾% in 2025, following 2023’s 3% pace. With softer growth this year, inflation rates in most advanced economies are expected to come down slowly, reaching central bank targets in 2025.” Continue…

The Trudeau Liberals are drawing the ire of the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) over its costly bailout of government-approved media.

A PBO analysis of Canadian newsroom subsidies — the first of its kind — follows the doubling of payroll rebates to $29,750 a year for broadcasters and online media, reported Blacklock’s Reporter.

The Trudeau Liberals in their Fall Economic Statement last November 21 doubled newsroom rebates from a maximum $13,750 per employee to $29,750 amid calls for more taxpayer subsidies.

The expanded rebates propose to increase the cap on labour expenditures per eligible newsroom employee from $55,000 to $85,000. It further proposed that the Canadian journalism labour tax credit rate be temporarily increased from 25% to 35% for a period of four years.

Budget Officer Yves Giroux is "requesting specific data" as part of his report, including figures on the number of newsroom employees identified in rebate claims and their salaries. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) manages rebates, he writes, who will be relied on to provide "timely access to quality information held by government departments."

The claim: That the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation had discovered the remains of 215 children, as young as six years old, in unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential school.

A claim that has since been proven to be false. To date, not a single body has been discovered in an unmarked grave on the property, and the band government has failed to excavate or allow the RCMP or the BC Coroners office to investigate the alleged discovery.

Yet despite all of the above, and the ongoing church attacks that can often be linked to such unproven claims, the federal government, much like leftist media, has failed to inform Canadians about the truth regarding the matter, even if that truth could potentially lessen hateful attacks against Christian places of worship.

In his ruling, Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley wrote:

"I have concluded that the decision to issue the Proclamation does not bear the hallmarks of reasonableness – justification, transparency and intelligibility – and was not justified in relation to the relevant factual and legal constraints that were required to be taken into consideration.

In my view, there can be only one reasonable interpretation of EA sections 3 and 17 and paragraph 2(c) of the CSIS Act and the Applicants have established that the legal constraints on the discretion of the GIC to declare a public order emergency were not satisfied."
