To preserve a “livable planet,” the Earth can’t warm more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the United Nations warns.

Failure to maintain that level could lead to several catastrophes, including increased droughts and weather-related disasters, more heat-related illnesses and deaths, and less food and more poverty, according to NASA.

To avert the looming tribulations and limit global temperature increases, 194 member states and the European Union in 2016 signed the U.N. Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty with a goal to “substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.”

After the agreement, global spending on climate-related projects increased exponentially.

In 2021 and 2022, the world’s taxpayers spent, on average, $1.3 trillion on such projects each year, according to the nonprofit advisory group Climate Policy Initiative.

That’s more than double the spending rate in 2019 and 2020, which came in at $653 billion per year, and it’s significantly up from the $364 billion per year in 2011 and 2012, the report found.

Despite the money pouring in, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that 2023 was the hottest year on record.

NOAA’s climate monitoring stations found that the Earth’s average land and ocean surface temperature in 2023 was 1.35 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average.

“Not only was 2023 the warmest year in NOAA’s 174-year climate record—it was the warmest by far,” said Sarah Kapnick, NOAA’s chief scientist.

“A warming planet means we need to be prepared for the impacts of climate change that are happening here and now, like extreme weather events that become both more frequent and severe.”

But a growing chorus of climate scientists are saying the temperature readings are faulty and that the trillions of dollars pouring in are based on a problem that doesn’t exist. Continue…

The company has around 85,000 workers in management.

Several provincial ministers have signed a joint letter urging the Trudeau government to delay the planned expansion of medical assistance in dying to the mentally ill indefinitely.

This letter comes as federal Health Minister Mark Holland alongside Justice Minister Arif Virani, announced that the Liberals would be tabling legislation to push back the expansion of assisted suicide scheduled for March 17 by an unspecified amount of time.

The expansion to the assisted suicide regime would controversially allow Canadians whose deaths was not reasonably foreseeable and whose sole reason for seeking assisted suicide was their mental illness.

Ministers from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon signed on to the open letter. Continue…

Postsecondary institutions in B.C., Ontario push back on foreign student cap

The recent cap on international students has led to some pushback from postsecondary schools and provincial governments, including Colleges Ontario and B.C. Premier David Eby.

Eby wants to see exemptions in occupational areas where there is high demand, such as nurses, early childhood care and truck drivers.

“We can’t have this cap impacting our healthcare system or the availability of childcare, or the ability to build the homes that we need,” Eby told reporters.

The Trudeau government announced a cap on international students visas last week due to unsustainable housing, pressure on the healthcare system, and corruption within some of the student visa programs.

“This is the first stage of a discussion that we’re having with the federal government about the number itself as well as any other areas that might be carved out for areas of particular needs,” Eby told CBC News in an interview.

While Eby does agree that there are too many international students entering Canada every year, he wants to see the Trudeau government reduce the number “in a way that minimizes harm to the overall provincial economy, to postsecondary institutions, and to international students themselves.”

Canada accepted 352,325 international students in 2015. By the end of last year, that number had tripled to 1,038,850.

A woman who challenged a fine she received for attending a protest against the curfew imposed by the Quebec government during the Covid-19 lockdown has lost her court case.

Stéphanie Pépin was charged by police for being out in public past 8:00 pm on Jan. 9, 2021, while she was on her way to attend a 9:00 pm protest against the curfew.

The curfew was imposed by Quebec Premier Francois Legault’s government earlier that same day.

Quebec was the only province in Canada and the only jurisdiction in North America to place a curfew on its citizens.

The curfew law first came into effect on Jan. 9, 2021 and lasted until May 28, 2021. It was later reinstated from Dec. 21, 2021 until Jan. 17, 2022.

People were prohibited from leaving their homes between the hours of 8:00 pm and 5:00 am and police officers were permitted to issue fines ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 to violators under the Public Health Act. Continue…

In its latest annual publication on violent crime, Statistics Canada has confirmed that the majority of gun-related crimes in Canada are not perpetrated by legal firearm owners.

The report, titled “Firearms and Violent Crime in Canada, 2022,” sheds light on the role of illicit guns and unlicensed owners in the country’s crime statistics and pokes a hole in the Liberal government’s claim that cracking down on legal gun ownership helps tackle crime.

Published Tuesday as part of its Juristat series, the report covers various aspects of Canada’s justice system, including crime statistics, homicide, impaired driving, justice system resources, expenditures, youth court statistics, and corrections statistics.

Statistics Canada’s findings highlight a crucial distinction between legal and illicit firearms. The report reveals that legal firearms rarely play a role in homicides committed by their owners who are in good standing.

“The firearms used in homicides were rarely legal firearms used by their legal owners who were in good standing,” wrote Statistics Canada.

Out of 113 homicides involving a firearm, legal firearm owners accounted for 24 incidents.

"So, we're in the hypothetical of hypothetical," he claimed. "In the near term, the prime minister is going to be the leader of the Liberal Party in the next election. And I support him."

While the UN special envoy on climate action and finance ruled out a leadership bid for the Liberal Party, he did not conclusively oppose a run for MP.

Carney said he has "a few years left in him" and that he "cares deeply" about Canada. He currently works as the head of transition investing for Brookfield Asset Management, with prior stints at the Bank of Canada.

"I've had the honour of serving in roles here both in the public service and as [Bank of Canada] governor, and this is a time of consequence. These are big, big issues," Carney said of cost of living, housing and the ‘net-zero’ transition.

"We've been touching on the reshaping of the global economy, where Canada is going, and how we deliver for Canadians today and tomorrow," he added. "And there's various ways to contribute to that, and I always look for opportunities to do that."

Despite backing the prime minister, Carney left some room for speculation last November when he did not rule out a bid for the party’s leadership during an interview with The Globe and Mail.

Canada's Attorney General essentially holds a 'trump card' over disclosure disputes about 'classified information' as determined by the federal government, explained an expert witness during the second day of the Foreign Interference Commission's (FIC) public hearings in Ottawa, ON, on Tuesday.

The FIC was launched by the federal government, ostensibly to examine political influence operations in Canada run by foreign states and non-state actors. Its mandate declares its focus to be on China and Russia.

Leah West, an associate professor of international affairs at Carleton University with legal expertise regarding public inquiries, joined the hearing to explain laws and procedures governing the classification of information by the federal government. The federal government, she said, uses two primary justifications to classify information:

to protect Canadian national security and/or the security of its allies;

to protect the safety of individuals.

Sensitive information is classified when the government claims that its public disclosure would undermine national security or place certain individuals – such as confidential sources – in danger.

The Attorney General of Canada (AGC), West stated, "is holding a trump card" over disclosure disputes, even with the ability to override federal courts. Canada's current attorney general is Liberal MP Arif Virani.

West explained the AGC's power in the event of a federal court ordering the disclosure of information deemed "classified" by the federal government against the federal government's objections. She explained how the process would unfold.

“During the early days of the declared pandemic, Dr. Benoit followed the latest data and stayed on top of COVID-19 developments. I’ve interviewed a number of founders and leaders of new conservative parties, from Maxime Bernier to Pastor Art Pawlowski, current political leaders, to past Canadian Conservative politicians such as Preston Manning and Brian Peckford. All are well intentioned and truly believe that government exists to serve the people.

But none have given as much thought to the problems facing our country as my guests today.

Luke Denis and Chris Hampton are the founders of the United Freedom Party of Alberta. They are also the authors of the book The Freedom Handbook, published in 2017.

It’s been said that 90% of any solution is understanding the problem.

What Luke and Chris propose would be to many, an extreme form of libertarianism. Minimum government and maximum personal rights and responsibilities. But Luke and Chris provide very sound, thoughtful arguments to support their idea that not only can such a society survive, but that it would thrive and become a model that others would follow. US To Deploy Nukes In Britain For First Time In 15 Years

The US will deploy nuclear weapons to the UK for the first time in 15 years in a move Russia will view as a provocation, The Telegraph reported, citing Pentagon documents.

Pentagon procurement contracts show that the US is planning to station B61-12 nuclear warheads at RAF Lakenheath, a base in Suffolk, England.

The US pulled its nuclear weapons out of the UK in 2008, and its decision to redeploy them demonstrates the low state of US-Russia relations.

According to The Telegraph, Russia said a US deployment of nukes to the UK would be an “escalation” that would require “compensating counter-measures.”

The US already has nukes stationed in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, and the Netherlands as part of NATO’s nuclear sharing program.

Last year, Russia announced it was deploying nuclear weapons to Belarus amid tensions over the proxy war in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed to NATO’s nuclear sharing program to justify his decision.

The B61 is the US’s primary nuclear gravity bomb, and the B61-12 is its newest iteration. It’s considered a tactical nuclear weapon, which have a lower yield than strategic warheads. But the B61-12 has a maximum yield of 50 kilotons, more than three times as powerful as the bomb the US dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

The UK has a nuclear arsenal of its own and announced in 2021 that it was expanding, raising questions about Britain’s commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The UK said it was raising the ceiling of its nuclear warhead stockpile from 180 to 240 and that it would no longer publish information about the number of warheads it maintains in an operational status.

Updated COVID-19 vaccines may cause heart inflammation and severe allergic shock, according to a new study from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Researchers with the FDA, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and companies like CVS looked at health care databases to try to figure out if there were signs the Moderna and Pfizer bivalent COVID-19 vaccines might be linked to any health issues.

They found several safety signals. One signal was for myocarditis, a form of heart inflammation, and a related condition called pericarditis following Pfizer vaccination in adults aged 18 to 35. Another was for anaphylaxis, or severe allergic shock, following Moderna and Pfizer vaccination in people aged 18 to 64.

The signals were detected in a database from Carelon Research.

The incidence rate for anaphylaxis was 74.5 cases per 100,000 person-years following Pfizer vaccination and 109.4 cases per 100,000 person-years following Moderna vaccination.

Researchers arrived at an incidence rate of 131.4 cases of myocarditis/pericarditis per 100,000 person-years after a Pfizer shot.

No stratification was done by gender, despite myocarditis, according to many studies, disproportionately affecting males. Continue…

Canada’s rental vacancy rate hits record low of 1.5%

Canada’s vacancy rate dropped to the lowest level on record last year at 1.5%, according to a new report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation while the country also simultaneously saw a new national high for the average cost of rent.

“Although most Canadian cities saw increased rental supply, it was not enough to keep pace with increased demand pressures,” read a press release from the CMHC on Wednesday.

Renters are forced to compete against one another more aggressively when the vacancy rate is so low, which allows landlords to increase prices with less resistance.

Canadians are paying new highs on rental units for six consecutive months, with the average asking price being $2,178 per month in October. The upward trend has seen a 9.9% year-over-year increase.

Record high mortgage rates have made the possibility of home ownership far out of reach for many Canadians, who are stuck dealing with a volatile rental market. Continue…
