A prosecutor said Friday that a Haitian orphanage’s American founder forced four boys to engage in sexual acts more than a decade ago.
NBC News reports,
Michael Geilenfeld, 71, is a “dangerous, manipulative and cunning child sexual predator” who for decades has preyed on poor children while working abroad as a missionary, Jessica Urban, a prosecutor with the Justice Department’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, said during a detention hearing in Denver federal court.
Her statements marked the first time authorities have disclosed details of the investigation that led to Geilenfeld’s Jan. 18 indictment in Florida on charges of child sexual abuse. Urban, speaking via a video feed, offered the evidence to support her argument that Geilenfeld should not be released on bond as his case proceeds. She said authorities fear he or his supporters will try to intimidate victims to prevent them from testifying against him.
The abuse took place between November 2006 and December 2010, according to the indictment, a time period when Geilenfeld was operating the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys orphanage. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Continue…

Accidents during takeoff are in second place, although they only account for 8.5 percent of accidents.

A review by the northern Saskatchewan town of La Ronge concluded that adopting electric vehicles for municipal use didn’t make sense and posed too many risks, especially when it comes to emergency use.
The review comes as the federal government proposes to phase out the sale of new fuel vehicles by 2035.
La Ronge’s review indicates that the unpredictable nature of emergency responses could clash with the recharging needs of electric vehicles. The report concluded that, overall, EVs do not align with the demands of emergencies.
“There are several services and departments that have unpredictive emergency response functions (such as airport, fire, public works), and the reliability of responding vehicles is crucial,” wrote analysts.
For example, ongoing or repeated emergencies can require vehicles to be in use for periods that do not align with the recharging needs of electric vehicles. As such, electric vehicles do not generally meet the needs of emergencies.” Continue…
Kelowna admitting homeless into “temporary” tiny home village

A British Columbia city says its tiny home village will be a temporary solution to the city’s growing homelessness crisis.
In collaboration with the province, Kelowna has built 60 single-room tiny homes, each spanning 60 square feet, along the 700 block of Crowley Ave. in the north end.
The pilot project will assess how effective tiny homes could be as a response to the growing homeless population in British Columbia.
According to Mayor Tom Dyas, the city will work with local residents to address concerns about the village being erected near residential homes.
“We’re now meeting with the team that has been structured here … on a quarterly basis,” he said.
“Recognizing that there are concerns in the neighbourhood, we want to do everything we can to address those concerns.” Continue…

That’s right. Amidst a rise in antisemitism across the country, high tensions for many impacted by the Israel-Hamas war, and on the international date set aside to remember the millions of Holocaust victims and survivors, the Premier’s post stated the following:
"This province has no place for bigotry and racism. We stand with the Muslim community throughout Canada on this sorrowful day of remembrance."

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Employees from a Ukrainian arms firm conspired with defense ministry officials to embezzle almost $40 million earmarked to buy 100,000 mortar shells for the war with Russia, Ukraine’s security service reported.
The SBU said late Saturday that five people have been charged, with one person detained while trying to cross the Ukrainian border. If found guilty, they face up to 12 years in prison.
The investigation comes as Kyiv attempts to clamp down on corruption in a bid to speed up its membership in the European Union and NATO. Officials from both blocs have demanded widespread anti-graft reforms before Kyiv can join them.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected on an anti-corruption platform in 2019, long before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both the president and his aides have portrayed the recent firings of top officials, notably that of Ivan Bakanov, former head of the State Security Service, in July 2022, as proof of their efforts to crack down on graft. Nine countries, including the United States, have dropped funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) — the special refugee agency for Palestinians — after staff members were shown to have joined the Hamas terror attack October 7.
The U.S. dropped suspended for UNRWA on Friday after the agency fired 12 staffers after being presented by Israel with evidence against them. (Ironically, the Biden administration restored funding for UNRWA after President Donald Trump had canceled it.)
The Swiss parliament voted to defund UNRWA in December, after reports emerged that UNRWA staff had praised the October 7 terror attack, in which about 1,200 people were murdered. Several graduates of UNRWA schools were also among the terrorists.
But the Biden administration continued to defend its decision to fund UNRWA, as recently as earlier this month. President Biden not only restored funding, but paid UNRWA the money Trump had withheld. (The U.S. is the single largest donor to the agency.)
A report earlier this month by the watchdog organization UN Watch revealed that 3,000 UNRWA employees were on a Telegram group that praised the October 7 attack. But tthe revelation that UNRWA employees participated personally was the final straw.
As the Times of Israel noted, the United Kingdom and Finland followed the U.S. in canceling their UNRWA funding; then Italy cut off funds; then Germany, Scotland, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland also ended their funding to UNRWA.
UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini made a desperate plea Saturday for funds to continue, despite the allegations against “a small group of staff.” Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, simply tweeted in response: “Mr. Lazzarini please resign.” Continue…

Laverne Waskahat, 47, who is a trans-identified biological male, has been convicted of violent sex crimes against children under the age of 16.

Before Canada’s recent designation of 85 Chinese academic institutions as potential threats to national security, several Canadian universities had engaged in extensive interactions with some of those institutions.
The list of Named Research Organizations released Jan. 16 is part of Ottawa’s Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern, introduced to bolster Canadian universities’ research security.
However, many of the collaborations, in particular those between individual professors in Canada and China, remain undisclosed. Some instances indicate ongoing research partnerships and academic exchanges involving several leading universities within Canada’s U15 group, such as University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, and McGill University.
There are also a few Canadian schools, including University of Saskatchewan, and Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, that continue to host the controversial Confucius Institute, which has faced long-standing concerns over alleged undue Chinese influence.
The research collaborations span fields now deemed by the feds as “Sensitive Technology Research Areas.” They include artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, biotechnology, quantum science, robotics and autonomous systems, and aerospace, space, and satellite technology.
For instance, McGill University states on its “Global Engagement” webpage that its scholars have co-authored nearly 5,300 publications with China-based researchers. Among the international funding sources listed by McGill is the Canada-China Scholars’ Exchange Program (CCSEP) run by Global Affairs Canada (GAC).
