In May 2018, I had the privilege of traveling to Germany. As we drove from Frankfurt north to Hanover and Bremen, we encountered spectacular countryside with pastoral fields of yellow blooms. What was this crop? It is not something I regularly saw in Texas.

It turns out that the crop is canola, or rapeseed as it is called in Europe. Rapeseed is planted in winter or spring, and shows off its beautiful and vibrant golden flowers in summertime. The plant is a close cousin to mustard, cauliflower and broccoli, all of which are in the cabbage (Brassica) family. Canada is the largest producer, with Germany as a close second. The culinary version of rapeseed is also called canola, a word literally derived from “Canada” and “oil”. The term canola is mainly used today in the US and Australia, with most countries still using “rapeseed” as the term.

Rapeseed oil is widely used in food processing and cooking. Mainstream health articles tell us that rapeseed oil is healthy because it is high in healthy fats. The articles are quick to distinguish between culinary rapeseed oil and industrial rapeseed oil.

Yes, that’s right. Rapeseed oil was extensively used during World War II for ship building. When the US couldn’t get the oil from traditional suppliers in Europe and Asia, it turned to Canada for rapeseed oil. The Canadian market subsequently boomed, but plummeted after the war was over. Continue…

A Delta Airlines Boeing 757 jet taxiing on the runway with 184 passengers on board at Atlanta’s international airport was forced to abort takeoff when a nose wheel fell off and parted ways with the stricken flight.

The wheel “came off and rolled down the hill” as the flight was waiting to begin its journey, according to a report from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The plane is 32 years old.

Delta confirmed the incident on the plane scheduled to fly from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Bogota, Colombia.

“Delta Flight 982 ATL/BOG was taxiing for departure when a nose gear tire came loose from the landing gear,” Delta said in a statement Wednesday, NBC News reports.

“All customers and their bags were removed from the aircraft, transferred to the gate and onto a replacement aircraft. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience.”

The plane was put back into service the next day, Delta said.

None of the passengers or six crew members were hurt in the incident, according to the FAA’s preliminary report.

Belgium is reportedly set to become the first EU nation to use Russia’s money to provide assistance to Ukraine. Brussels plans to spend the interest earned on frozen Russian assets on military aid for Kiev worth $666 million, Belga News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing the Belgian defense minister’s office.

Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder had a phone call with her Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov, on Monday. “Belgium will provide €611 million ($666 million) in military aid this year and has a long-term commitment to supporting the modernization of our defense forces,” Umerov said on X (formerly Twitter) following the conversation. Dedonder reposted the message.

The Belgian minister’s office then confirmed to Belga on Tuesday that the phone call had taken place, adding that the money for the promised aid would come from interest generated by frozen Russian assets stored in Belgium. The defense ministry did not issue any separate statement on the issue.

A total of $300 billion worth of Russian forex reserves have been frozen by G7 countries, the EU, and Australia since the start of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022.
