January 20, 1961: John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the youngest elected President of the United States. During the ceremony, Kennedy delivered one of the most memorable speeches in US history, urging Americans to contribute to their country with his famous line, "Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country."
The poet Robert Frost also recited "The Gift Outright." Frost originally intended to recite a new poem titled "Dedication" but was unable to read his own handwriting in the bright sunlight. Instead, he recited "The Gift Outright" from memory.
At the time, Kennedy was faced with the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement, but his presidency was tragically cut short after just two years and ten months when he was assassinated in 1963.
