As of 2016, there were around 4,000 political appointment positions which an incoming administration needs to review and fill or confirm, of which about 1,200 require Senate confirmation.

While it's preferred, it's not legally required for a presidential candidate's running mate to be from a different state. The Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that at least one of the candidates for President and Vice President must not be from the same state as the electors.

Electors can only vote for one candidate from their own state. Running mates can also be chosen from swing states to improve the candidate's chances of winning in that state.

Since the mid-20th century, it's been customary for the presidential nominee to select a preferred running mate. The convention then nominates and accepts the running mate
