U.N. Chief Guterres Warns Israel: Rejection of a Two-State Solution Threatens World Peace
Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of a two-state solution indefinitely prolongs a conflict that threatens world peace and emboldens extremists everywhere, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned Tuesday.
AP reports Guterres told a ministerial meeting of the U.N. Security Council “the right of the Palestinian people to build their own fully independent state must be recognized by all, and a refusal to accept the two-state solution by any party must be firmly rejected.”
The alternative of a one-state solution “with such a large number of Palestinians inside without any real sense of freedom, rights and dignity … will be inconceivable,” he further warned, adding to his previous comments on the matter.
Guterres also warned that the risks of regional escalation of the conflict “are now becoming a reality,” pointing to Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan.
He urged all parties “to step back from the brink and to consider the horrendous costs” of a wider war, the AP report sets out.
Pressure on Israel to accept a Palestinian state as an outcome of the war started by Hamas is coming from other directions beside the United Nations.

On Sunday the European Union’s top diplomat claimed a two-state solution for Israel-Gaza has “the whole international community” behind it, as Breitbart News reported.
Commission Vice-Present Josep Borrell, the career Spanish Socialist politician who presently serves as the E.U.’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said Israel must heed the directions of others.
“What we want to do is to build a two-state solution, so let’s talk about it… So, from now on, I will not talk about the peace process, but about the two-state solution process. If we are serious about that, we have to study the underlying causes that prevent this solution from being implemented.”
While Borrell acknowledged Hamas “is one of” the problems preventing a two-state solution, he nevertheless said “there are others” in an apparently oblique reference to the Israeli government.
The Biden administration has also been pushing for a Palestinian state, with President Joe Biden calling it “the only way to guarantee the long-term security of both the Israeli and the Palestinian people”, and his Secretary of State Antony Blinken telling the recent Davos forum there needs to be a Palestinian state.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will not allow a Palestinian state as long as he remains in office.

EU retail giant accused of ‘sexualizing children’
H&M was blasted for a marketing campaign featuring schoolgirls dressed to ‘make heads turn’
Swedish clothing giant H&M has pulled one of its online school-season ads after being accused of sexualizing children.
The advertisement shown on social media in Australia featured two young girls in black-and-white school uniforms holding pink backpacks. The caption said, “Make those heads turn in H&M’s Back to School fashion.”
Some users criticized the company, arguing that the combination of the imagery and the tagline were “highly inappropriate” and amounted to “shameful exploitation” of children.
“Parents generally prefer [that] heads don’t ‘turn’ when others see their daughters walking to school, on a bus or in class,” Australian women’s rights activist Melinda Tankard Reist wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Why would you want to fuel the idea that little girls should draw attention to their looks, bodies and ‘style’?”
H&M took down the advertisement after the backlash. “This ad has now been removed. We are deeply sorry for the offense this has caused and will look into how we present campaigns going forward,” the company said in a statement to the media.
The founder of Mumsnet, a popular UK message board for parents, Justine Roberts, said it was the right decision to ax the ad. “While we’re pleased that H&M have accepted their mistake and removed the advert, it should never have been created in the first place,” she told the BBC.
It is not the first time H&M’s marketing has caused outrage online. In 2018, the company was accused of racist messaging when its UK website featured a picture of a black boy wearing a green hoodie with the words “coolest monkey in the jungle” emblazoned on it. The company promptly pulled the ad and apologized, saying that “even if unintentional, passive or casual racism needs to be eradicated wherever it exists.”

Court Finds Justin Trudeau’s Use of Counter-Terrorism Law Against Freedom Convoy Unconstitutional
A Canadian Federal Court Judge found Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s use of a counter-terrorism law to shut down the Freedom Convoy trucker protests against vaccine mandates and other lockdown measures in 2022 unconstitutional.
Federal Court Justice Richard Mosley ruled that the use of the Emergencies Act by the Liberal government of Justin Trudeau to shut down a series of trucker-led protests in February of 2022 was “unreasonable”, CBC reports.
The ruling came in response to a legal case brought forward by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, the Canadian Constitution Foundation, and other individuals who argued that the protests did not meet the legal threshold for the government to use the powers granted under the act, which had never been used and was originally intended as a means of combatting terrorists.
The protests, which began in January of 2022, were almost entirely peaceful and featured truckers using their vehicles to block roads in Ottawa and along the U.S. border in opposition to vaccine mandates and other lockdown diktats, for which they were falsely branded as “racists” by the Trudeau government.
The triggering of the Emergencies Act by Trudeau — reportedly at the urging of the Biden administration in the United States — allowed the government to arrest the leaders of the Freedom Convoy, freeze bank accounts of protesters, and seise donations intended for the protest.
The Act states that, for the government to declare a public emergency, there must be “threats to the security of Canada that are so serious as to be a national emergency.” The law defers to the definition of a threat from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, which lists espionage, serious violence, foreign interference, or intent to overthrow the government as examples that would meet the threshold.
In his ruling, Judge Mosley said:
I have concluded that the decision to issue the Proclamation does not bear the hallmarks of reasonableness – justification, transparency and intelligibility – and was not justified in relation to the relevant factual and legal constraints that were required to be taken into consideration.
“The potential for serious violence, or being unable to say that there was no potential for serious violence was, of course, a valid reason for concern,” he added. “But in my view, it did not satisfy the test required to invoke the Act.”
The judge went on to say that the actions from the government also “infringed” upon the rights guaranteed to citizens under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms: “It is declared that the Regulations infringed section 2(b) of the Charter and declared that the Order infringed section 8 of the Charter and that neither infringement was justified under section 1.”
The ruling of the judge contradicts findings from an inquiry led mostly by Trudeau government officials that found that the government had met the threshold. According to public broadcaster CBC, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said during a cabinet meeting in Montreal that the government intends to appeal the ruling from Judge Mosely.
In response to the ruling, Rebel News founder and ardent supporter of the Freedom Convoy protests, Ezra Levant said: “For two years Trudeau and the regime media called the truckers illegal. Today the Federal Court ruled that Trudeau’s violent response was illegal. Shame on every #JustinJourno who parroted his line. Today’s ruling was a judgment of them, too.”

US Supreme Court allows Biden to dismantle Texas border fence
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has vowed to defy the ruling
The US Supreme Court has authorized federal agents to remove razor wire barricades installed along the Mexican border by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Amid record numbers of illegal border crossings, Republicans argue that President Joe Biden is “actively aiding and abetting” an “invasion.”
In a 5-4 decision on Monday, the court granted an emergency appeal by the Biden administration and ruled that Abbott must allow federal authorities access to the border. Though nominally conservative, Justices Amy Coney Barrett and John Roberts sided with their three liberal colleagues to grant the appeal. None of the justices explained their decision in writing.
Abbott moved Texas National Guard troops to the border in 2021 and installed around 30 miles of razor-sharp concertina wire at the popular crossing spot of Eagle Pass. When Biden’s Department of Homeland Security ordered Border Patrol agents to begin cutting the wire last year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the Biden administration, accusing the agents of damaging state property in order to “assist” migrants to “illegally cross” the border.
The Biden administration argued that an unfavourable decision would allow “state-law regimes” to supplant federal immigration law and hamper federal agents’ ability to “quickly respond to emergency situations” along the border.
Republicans reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision with outrage. “This is beyond inaction,” South Carolina Senator Tim Scott wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday evening. “President Biden is actively aiding and abetting the largest southern border invasion our country has ever seen.”
”This is not over,” Abbott tweeted, adding that he “will continue to defend Texas’ constitutional authority to secure the border and prevent the Biden Admin from destroying our property.” In a series of follow-up posts to social media on Tuesday, Abbott said that more concertina wire would be installed, and that the national guard would remain in place.
More than 300,000 migrants crossed the US-Mexico border in December, CBS News reported earlier this month, citing government data. This figure represents a record monthly high and eclipses the previous record set in September. At least 7.5 million people – more than the population of the state of Arizona – have entered the US illegally since Biden took office in 2021, according to US Customs and Border Protection data.
Under Biden’s policy of ‘catch and release’, illegal immigrants are apprehended, detained, and then released into the US with orders to show up at court hearings at a later date. As of December, there is a backlog of more than 3.2 million such cases, and newly arriving immigrants can sometimes expect to wait a decade for their case to be heard, the Associated Press reported last summer.

Earthquake and Landslides Rock China
East Turkistan, home of the oppressed Uyghur Muslims, was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 on Tuesday afternoon, the day after a massive landslide struck the southwestern province of Yunnan. The earthquake killed at least three people, while at least 31 have been killed by the landslide.
China’s state-run Global Times reported that dictator Xi Jinping “demanded an all-out search and rescue” for victims of the landslide in Yunnan.
Xi also “demanded strengthened monitoring and a scientific approach in search and rescue efforts to guard against secondary disasters, as well as ensuring appropriate measures are taken to console the families of the victims and resettle those affected.”
The landslide struck a village called Liangshui in the early morning hours, catching residents by surprise and burying at least 47 of them in their homes. Rescue workers battled heavy snow, icy roads, and freezing temperatures to dig out some of the victims, while hundreds of village residents were evacuated to minimize the risk of another devastating landslide.
“We were all asleep at that time, in the early morning when it was still dark. Suddenly, there was a loud noise, and the ground shook. It felt like a major earthquake,” one of the survivors said.
According to the Global Times, over 900 rescue workers plus dozens of rescue dogs responded to the Liangshui disaster, and more could be on the way from neighboring provinces.
On Tuesday, Chinese state media reported 19 people were still missing in the rubble of shattered buildings and deep piles of frozen mud, while the official death toll was raised to 31. Search and rescue efforts were suspended temporarily on Tuesday due to a new landslide alert.
The mountain country of Yunnan is prone to landslides, which can be devastating for towns such as Liangshui clustered at the feet of the mountains. The preliminary investigation of Monday’s tragedy found that a section of clifftop about 330 feet wide collapsed and triggered the landslide, but the reason for this collapse was not immediately determined.
The Associated Press (AP) noted that “rain or unsafe construction work” are leading causes of landslides in China. At least 70 people were killed by landslides in China last year, 50 of them in a single incident at an open-pit mine in Inner Mongolia.
Meanwhile, Tuesday’s early-morning earthquake in Wushi county, East Turkistan – what the Communist Party calls the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) – destroyed at least 47 houses and killed three people. The Global Times reported that 12,426 people have been evacuated from the affected area.
Tremors from the quake were felt as far away as Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang, and in the neighboring countries of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Wushi residents reported buildings visibly swayed for over a minute, inspiring them to rush outside despite sub-freezing temperatures.
The epicenter of the quake was located in a sparsely populated area, as Xinjiang Earthquake Administration chief Zhang Yongjiu explained to reporters.
“This 7.1 rating is very strong, but the death and injury situation is not severe,” Zhang said.
“It is the first time I’ve felt such a strong tremor in my life. I shouted ‘earthquake’ and I ran downstairs. I didn’t even have time to get my clothes and my shoes on,” said a survivor from Aksu, a prefecture about sixty miles from the epicenter.
As with the Yunnan landslides, rescue workers in Wushi said extreme cold was an obstacle, as temperatures plunged below zero degrees Fahrenheit. China’s Ministry of Emergency Management forwarded a supply of tents, blankets, and winter clothing for residents who cannot yet return to their homes.
Rescue teams in Wushi included hundreds of soldiers from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), as China maintains a heavy military presence in the restless province.

Hollywood Spent Years Appeasing Communist China, Now No American Movies Crack 2023 Top Ten Gross List
Hollywood’s losing streak in China continued in 2023, with no American movies cracking the country’s top ten list of the highest grossing titles of the year.
The pitiful results come despite Disney CEO Bob Iger’s aggressive efforts to get Beijing to approve more Hollywood titles for domestic release. Disney managed to score Chinese dates for its woke movies including The Little Mermaid, Elemental, and the latest Indiana Jones sequel — only to see them bomb with local audiences.
Other Hollywood studios also fared poorly in China, with Warner Bros.’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer both tanking.
For 2023, Chinese audiences flocked to see homegrown blockbusters, including Zhang Yimou’s historic epic Full River Red and the sci-fi sequel The Wandering Earth 2, according to a New York Times report.
The crime thriller No More Bets was also a major success, as were the mystery Lost in the Stars and the feel-good mixed-martial arts drama Never Say Never.
Hollywood’s wash-out in China is the latest sign of the country’s growing disenchantment with American blockbusters as well as the local movie industry’s continued growth.
In 2021, Hollywood’s share of China’s box office was already in free fall, collapsing to less than 10 percent as Beijing aimed to bolster its domestic movie industry while continuing to block major Hollywood releases from playing in Chinese cinemas.
China’s Communist Party has been actively rooting for Hollywood to fail.
As Breitbart News reported, the Chinese government propaganda newspaper Global Times recently predicted a “total collapse of the box office” for Hollywood in the near future as a result of its movies’ “repetitive” plots and “dated” American values.
The CCP keeps tight control on what foreign titles get released on local screens and has sharply decreased the number as hostilities between Washington, D.C. and Beijing grew in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
That number has risen slightly in the past couple of years, thanks in large part to Disney’s Iger, whose warm relations with the CCP date back decades. But the magic is no longer there. Even Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water underperformed in China, grossing less than the first Avatar.
Meanwhile, the Hollywood flops keep piling up.
Warner Bros.’ superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is failing at the Chinese box office, grossing just $60 million in a few weeks of release despite heavy promotion from actor Jason Momoa, according to the Times.
The first Aquaman movie grossed $293 million China back in 2018.
