On January 24, 2024, Russia claimed that an Ilyushin-76 military transport plane carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) crashed in the Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine. The plane was also said to be carrying six crew members and three others.
According to Russia's Defense Ministry, the plane was carrying the POWs to an exchange region due to a "terrorist act". However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, and the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights all issued statements saying they are "gathering and analyzing information" about what happened.
The Il-76 is a military transport plane designed to airlift troops, cargo, military equipment, and weapons. It usually has a crew of five and can carry up to 90 passengers.
