Adm. Stavridis: Won't Rule Out VP Run If Called. Jan. 23, 2024
Former NATO supreme commander, Adm. James Stavridis, said Tuesday he wouldn't rule out a run for national office, including as a vice president, but only if the nation, not just the "No Labels" movement, wants him.
"I would never turn down a request from the nation to serve in government," Stavridis told "The Michael Smerconish Program" on Sirius XM.
Stavridis also noted that he's had some "loose conversations" with No Labels' leadership and believes the idea of his becoming their candidate is "very unlikely" as he is "very concerned about how that would tip the election in extremely unpredictable directions."
"Anyway, from all I can see with No Labels, they are proceeding down a path looking forpure political players, so a Joe Manchin or a Jon Huntsmanare the names I frequently hear," Stavridis said.
Stavridis was floated as a possibility Monday by New York Times opinion columnist Bret Stephens, who wrote that the "hour is late" for President Joe Biden, and he wants to see first lady Jill Biden persuade him to drop out of this year's presidential race so the party can pick a new ticket.
Stephens said that ticket would "ideally" involveMichigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer running for president with Stavridis as her running mate.
No Labels, meanwhile, is a "very well-meaning group of people who are seeking to begin a process that I think is ultimately going to occur," said Stavridis.
"Sooner or later, these two political parties, Republicans and Democrats, are going to be deeply challenged by a new movement," he said. "We act as though somewhere in the Constitution, it requires the country to have a Republican Party and a Democratic Party. Newsflash: That's not in there. We didn't start with them. We started with Whigs and Federalists. We had Nationalists. We've had a lot of political parties in this country."
Much of the nation, Stavridis added, is dissatisfied by Republicans and Democrats, leaving an opening for a candidate affiliated with neither party.
But when Smerconish argued that Whitmer and Stavridis would be a "dream ticket," given her political knowledge and his foreign policy credentials,Stavridis attempted to change the topic.
"Can we talk about Israel?" the retired admiral said.
