January 27, 1606: The trial of Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators began, following their involvement in the Gunpowder Plot. This plot was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I and blow up the House of Lords to re-establish Catholicism in England.
The plot was discovered on November 5, 1605, when Fawkes was found guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath the House of Lords. The conspirators were tried for high treason and found guilty. They were executed between January 30th and 31st, 1606, by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. The event is commemorated annually on November 5th as Guy Fawkes Night.
