Musk Says 1st Human Receives Brain-Tech Implant

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/elon-musk-neuralink-brain-tech-implant/2024/01/29/id/1151470/

Neuralink, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, for the first time implanted its device – which seeks to help patients with severe paralysis or degenerative diseases control external tech using only neural signals – in a human Sunday, and Musk said the patient is "recovering well."

The device is named Telepathy and the company said on its website the goal is to "create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow."

"The first human received an implant from @Neuralink yesterday and is recovering well," Musk posted on X, the social media platform that he owns. "Initial results show promising neuron spike detection."

In another post on X, Musk wrote the device "enables control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking. Initial users will be those who have lost the use of their limbs. Imagine if Stephen Hawking could communicate faster than a speed typist or auctioneer. That is the goal."

Details of the patient were not given, but the Daily Mail reported that Ashlee Vance, who wrote a 2015 biography, "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future," wrote for Bloomberg the ideal candidate for Neuralink's first human trial was "an adult under age 40 whose four limbs are paralyzed."

Neuralink began recruiting patients for its first human clinical trial in September after it received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May, according to a company blog post.

The blog post states, "The PRIME Study [short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface] is a groundbreaking investigational medical device trial for our fully implantable, wireless brain-computer interface [BCI] and aims to evaluate the safety of our implant and surgical robot and assess the initial functionality of our BCI for enabling people with paralysis to control external devices with their thoughts."

US Disabled Chinese Hacking Network Targeting Critical Infrastructure

https://www.newsmax.com/world/globaltalk/hacking-china/2024/01/29/id/1151452/

The U.S. government in recent months launched an operation to fight a pervasive Chinese hacking operation that successfully compromised thousands of internet-connected devices, according to two Western security officials and one person familiar with the matter.

The Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation sought and received legal authorization to remotely disable aspects of the Chinese hacking campaign, the sources told Reuters.

Known as Volt Typhoon, the malicious cyber activity has alarmed intelligence officials who say it is part of a larger effort to compromise Western critical infrastructure, including naval ports, internet service providers and utilities.

Such breaches could enable China, national security experts said, to remotely disrupt important facilities in the Indo-Pacific region that in some form support or service U.S. military operations.

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment. A spokesperson for the FBI and the Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

When Western nations first warned about Volt Typhoon in May, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the hacking allegations were a "collective disinformation campaign" from the Five Eyes countries, a reference to the intelligence sharing grouping of countries made up of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

Speaker Johnson Talks With Texas Gov., Rips Biden on Border

https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/mike-johnson-house-speaker-greg-abbott/2024/01/29/id/1151457/

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., slammed the Biden administration's open border policies as "undermining" the nation's security following a talk he had Monday with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

Abbott and Biden have butted heads over the flood of illegal immigrants into his state from Mexico and the governor's efforts to stop it. Abbott instructed the Texas National Guard to put up barriers of razor wire along the Rio Grande River that separates the U.S. from Mexico, and the Supreme Court last week ruled Biden's Customs and Border Patrol agents can cut down the wire.

The Biden administration also is suing to stop a Texas law that takes effect March 5 making it a state crime to cross into the country illegally between ports of entry. It penalizes repeat offenders with up to 20 years in prison. The law allows a judge to drop the charges if the illegal immigrant agrees to return to Mexico. The Biden administration maintains the federal government alone is solely responsible for border security.

"Under the U.S. Constitution, the federal government and the state of Texas have a dual and complimentary responsibility to exercise police powers to protect the health and safety of the people," Johnson said in a news release obtained by Newsmax. "Sadly, President Biden and his administration have undermined security, creating an ongoing catastrophe along the southern border.

"While we fight for the federal government to do its job, it is the expectation of the U.S. House of Representatives that the Biden Administration will not interfere as Texas fulfills its responsibilities."

Johnson wrote a letter to the House Republican Conference last week in which he said a bipartisan Senate deal involving Ukraine aid and southern border policy would be dead on arrival in the House if it incentivized illegal immigrants "to break our laws."

"I made clear [with Biden] that we stand with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in his heroic efforts to protect the citizens of his state and all Americans," Johnson wrote, "and I am emphasizing again today that House Republicans will vigorously oppose any policy proposals from the White House or Senate that would further incentivize illegal aliens to break our laws."
