Publicis Health Agrees To $350M Settlement Over Role In America’s Opioid Epidemic

6:16 PM – Thursday, February 1, 2024

Attorney General (AG) Andrea Joy Campbell announced a $350 million national settlement with Publicis Health in order to settle claims that the company helped OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma fuel the deadly opioid epidemic in the United States.

The state’s AG asserted that Publicis Health played a major part in creating “predatory and deceptive marketing strategies” for Purdue Pharma, which led to a rise in unnecessary OxyContin prescriptions and sales, exacerbating the opioid crisis.

This is the first time that a company’s advertising tactics has ever been charged for its part in the opioid crisis.

“For a decade, Publicis helped opioid manufacturers like Purdue Pharma convince doctors to overprescribe opioids, directly fueling the opioid crisis and causing the devastation of communities nationwide,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. “No amount of money can compensate for lives lost and addiction suffered, but with this agreement, Publicis will cease their illegal behavior and pay $350 million to help our communities rebuild.”

The state’s lawsuits claim that Publicis Health adopted a McKinsey & Co.-created “Evolve to Excellence” strategy for Purdue Pharma. The plan was to reward doctors who wrote the most OxyContin prescriptions. They urged doctors to use messaging tactics that highlighted the drug’s “abuse-deterrent” qualities, while pushing for higher dosages.

Additionally, a separate settlement was agreed to by McKinsey & Co., where they were forced to pay $641 million to settle claims made by several states.

“Publicis devised and deployed unfair and deceptive marketing campaigns designed to push doctors to prescribe opioids to more patients, in higher doses, and for longer periods of time,” a lawsuit by the state of Massachusetts said. “By design, Publicis’s schemes worked to counter public health measures intended to reduce unnecessary opioid use, because more opioid use generated more profits for Publicis’s opioid clients.”

Public Health is now required to pay $350 million to the states within 60 days, as stated in the settlement.

The settlement also banned the company from accepting future contracts or engagement related to the sales or marketing of opioids.

Additionally, in order to be made publicly available, Publicis must make certain internal documents available that describe its work for Purdue Pharma and other opioid manufacturers, as well as correspondence with consultants like McKinsey and Practice Fusion.

These documents will be stored in an online document repository.

Washington bomb squad responds to report of a rocket meant to carry nuclear warheads at local house

February 3, 2024

Police in Washington sent a bomb squad to a local house after its owner tried donating a rocket built to carry nuclear warheads to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

The Dayton, Ohio, museum called the Bellevue Police Department Wednesday after a local resident, unnamed by police, contacted the museum about donating a rocket part.

The rocket had belonged to the man’s dead neighbor, who had acquired the piece from an estate sale, police said in a blog Friday.

On Thursday, the department’s bomb squad went to the man’s house to examine the rocket. The piece was the fuselage of the Douglas AIR-2 Genie, an air-to-air rocket meant to carry a 1.5-kiloton nuclear warhead, police said.

There was no warhead attached and no rocket fuel, and as such posed no explosive risk, police said. The rocket will now be restored ahead of its eventual display at the Air Force Museum.

The Douglas AIR-2 Genie was only fired once with live ammunition at a July 19, 1957, test over Yucca Flats, Nevada, per the Air Force museum. The test was also the only time any U.S. nuclear-tipped air-to-air rocket was detonated.

At Least 19 Dead In Chile Forest Fires, State Of Emergency Declared

1:56 PM – Saturday, February 3, 2024

A state of emergency has been declared in Chile as forest fires are spreading through the nation, killing at least 19 people so far and leaving thousands homeless.

Around 1,100 homes have been destroyed and at least 19 people have died as a result of intense forest fires encircling a heavily populated area of central Chile, according to officials on Saturday.

Interior Minister Carolina Tohá stated that, as a result of this week’s abnormally high temperatures, 92 forest fires are presently raging in Chile’s south and center.

She reported that since Friday, at least 19,770 acres had burned due to two fires that were close to the towns of Quilpué and Villa Alemana.

A fire was posing a threat to Viña del Mar, a coastal resort town that has already experienced significant damage to certain neighborhoods.

Many blocks of residences and businesses in the hillside neighborhood of Villa Independencia on the eastern edge of town were totally destroyed. The streets were littered with burned-out cars with shattered windows.

Rolando Fernández, one of the residents who lost his home, spoke with the press, saying he has been left with nothing.

“I’ve been here for 32 years and never imagined this would happen,” Fernández said. “I’ve worked my whole life, and now I’m left with nothing.”

To put out the fires, Tohá said that three shelters had been set up in the Valparaíso region and that over 450 firefighters and 19 helicopters had been sent to the area.

She also stated that rescue teams were still having trouble getting to the neighborhoods that had been hit the hardest. Neighborhoods on the outskirts of Viña del Mar have been affected by the fires that are burning in difficult-to-reach mountains.

Blackouts have been reported by officials as a consequence of the fire. According to Tohá, three senior living facilities and four hospitals in the Valparaíso area had to be evacuated, and the fire also destroyed two bus terminals.
