King Charles Diagnosed With Cancer

King Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, says Buckingham Palace.

It is not prostate cancer, but was discovered during his recent treatment for an enlarged prostate.

The type of cancer has not been revealed, but according to a palace statement the King began "regular treatments" on Monday.

Buckingham Palace says the King "remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible".

During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.

Although he will pause his public events, the King, 75, will continue with his constitutional role as head of state.

Speaker Johnson Defends Standalone Israel Bill

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) defended a recent proposal to provide funding for Israel with no strings attached.

The proposal would grant around $17.6 billion to Israel.

It’s the House’s second Israel-centric proposal since Mr. Johnson took the gavel. An earlier proposal would have granted Israel roughly $14 billion offset by cuts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

For months, Mr. Johnson has insisted that the Senate needs to take up the bill as approved by the House in exchange for Israel aid.

However, since it passed the House it’s been collecting dust on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) desk, as Senate Democrats considered the IRS offsets a nonstarter.

On Feb. 3, Mr. Johnson announced the standalone Israel proposal to colleagues.

While the move could seem to be a surrender by Mr. Johnson on the IRS offsets, his decision to introduce it could be influenced by another package making its way through the congressional process.

For months, Senate lawmakers led by Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), and others have been at work on negotiating the details of a comprehensive national security package. The package would include aid for Israel, additional funding for Ukraine, and border security funding and policies.

However, House Republicans have been clear that, if rumors about the package’s contents are true, it’s a nonstarter in the House.

Specifically, many Republicans have hinged their opposition to the package on the basis of a rumored provision that would allow 5,000 illegal aliens to enter the United States every day—adding up to around 1.8 million illegal aliens entering the country legally per year.

While this might mean a reduction in the short term, Republicans are unwilling to codify any amount of illegal immigration into law.

With the text of the Senate’s national security package expected in the very near future, some see Mr. Johnson’s introduction of a standalone Israel bill as a reactionary move by the lower chamber.

But Mr. Johnson insisted during a Feb. 4 appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the move wasn’t calculated to set up a showdown.

“We passed the support for [Israel] many months ago, three months ago,” Mr. Johnson said. “Immediately after I became speaker we sent the necessary resources there.”

The Senate's $118 billion spending package, of which more than $60 billion would go to Ukraine, allows 1.5 million illegal migrants into the country per year, hobbles states like Texas by requiring legal challenges be arbitrated in DC courts, and funds NGOs who facilitate human trafficking to the tune of billions, is 'dead on arrival' according to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

As Punchbowl News puts it, the bill's Sunday night release was like "pouring gasoline on the fire that is the Senate GOP internal war," as "Senators and aides publicly and privately questioned whether a majority of the Republican Conference would back it." Some GOP Senators and outside conservative groups even called for an immediate leadership change over the package.

During a Sunday evening press call, Lankford said critics of the proposal had already come out against it before the text was released.

"If we have a crisis on our southern border, and we do… we should address that and do what we can to be able to solve that problem — not just hope that the problem gets better or hope that an election solves the issue," Lankford said - completely ignoring the fact that President Joe Biden could close the border with the stroke of a pen, today, without $60 billion going to Ukraine and 5,000 migrants allowed in per day.

Lankford said in response to these statements that he’s “a little confused… at how it could be ‘worse than expected.’” The Oklahoma Republican added he wants to huddle with the speaker’s team. Of course, Johnson’s statement will undoubtedly cause some on-the-fence GOP senators to vote against the bill.

“We’re at the beginning points of information,” Lankford asserted, dismissing the House GOP criticisms. “There are some people who just read Facebook posts… They made their decision based on the Facebook posts, not the text.”

A key and very evident theme out of the Red Sea is that the US has lost 'deterrence' and perhaps never had it to begin with. Despite over a dozen waves of large-scale Western coalition attacks on Houthi positions, the Yemeni Shia rebels are vowing more attacks on commercial shipping, as we've reported.

It is the same with Iran-aligned groups in Syria and Iraq, even after the Pentagon on Friday hit 85 targets with 120 bombs. This marked the single biggest US attack on 'Iranian proxies' in the region since the Gaza war began, but it didn't take long for these very groups to strike back.

The "Islamic Resistance in Iraq" as early as Saturday announced it attacked bases that house US soldiers in Erbil; however, some local sources have disputed that the attack took place, or at least came near where Americans were housed.

Importantly, President Biden in his statement on the Friday strikes underscored "Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing."

This means the escalating tit-for-tat will continue to spiral, as the latest overnight attack against an American base in northeast Syria also demonstrates:

Seven fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces were killed in an attack on an American base in eastern Syria overnight, a war monitor said Monday.

Seven SDF special forces "commandos" were killed and 18 others wounded in "a drone attack after midnight" on the Al-Omar oil field, the largest US-led coalition base in the country, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, updating an earlier toll.

One UK-based war monitor concluded that it marked the first major "attack by pro-Iran groups against American bases after the US strikes on Syria and Iraq."

Al-Omar has come to symbolize the years-long US military occupation of Syria's only oil and gas rich region, which before the war was an area producing just enough energy for Syria's domestic consumption. The Pentagon has used it as a base of operations to train its local proxy, the Kurdish-dominated SDF.

While the Pentagon officially maintains this is still part of the 'counter-ISIS' mission, the reality is that it has long been a counter-Iran mission, and part of ongoing efforts to isolate and punish the Assad government. Essentially it is resource theft which seeks to deny the 'pro-Iran axis' access to its own natural resources.

Insiders say pressure from the top results in credulous reporting of Israeli claims and silencing of Palestinian perspectives

CNN is facing a backlash from its own staff over editorial policies they say have led to a regurgitation of Israeli propaganda and the censoring of Palestinian perspectives in the network’s coverage of the war in Gaza.

Journalists in CNN newsrooms in the US and overseas say broadcasts have been skewed by management edicts and a story-approval process that has resulted in highly partial coverage of the Hamas massacre on 7 October and Israel’s retaliatory attack on Gaza.

“The majority of news since the war began, regardless of how accurate the initial reporting, has been skewed by a systemic and institutional bias within the network toward Israel,” said one CNN staffer. “Ultimately, CNN’s coverage of the Israel-Gaza war amounts to journalistic malpractice.”

According to accounts from six CNN staffers in multiple newsrooms, and more than a dozen internal memos and emails obtained by the Guardian, daily news decisions are shaped by a flow of directives from the CNN headquarters in Atlanta that have set strict guidelines on coverage.

They include tight restrictions on quoting Hamas and reporting other Palestinian perspectives while Israel government statements are taken at face value. In addition, every story on the conflict must be cleared by the Jerusalem bureau before broadcast or publication.

CNN journalists say the tone of coverage is set at the top by its new editor-in-chief and CEO, Mark Thompson, who took up his post two days after the 7 October Hamas attack. Some staff are concerned about Thompson’s willingness to withstand external attempts to influence coverage given that in a former role as the BBC’s director general he was accused of bowing to Israeli government pressure on a number of occasions, including a demand to remove one of the corporation’s most prominent correspondents from her post in Jerusalem in 2005.

Former Russian lawmaker Ponomarev charged with high treason — FSB

Since 2014 Ponomarev has been actively supporting the Kiev regime and publicly condemning Crimea’s reunification with Russia

Former member of Russia’s State Duma, or lower house of parliament, Ilya Ponomarev (recognizes as a foreign agent) has been charged with high treason, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said.

"On the basis of the collected data, the FSB Investigative Directorate opened and consolidated into a single case criminal cases under article 275 (high treason in the form of siding with an enemy), part 2, article 205.5 (participation in the activities of an organization recognized as terrorist under Russian laws), part 2, article 205.2 (public calls in the internet for terrorist activities), provision ‘v’ of part 2, article 280.4 (public calls in the internet for activities aimed against Russia’s security) of the Russian Criminal Code," it said.

The investigation continues. "Actions by all those involved will be qualified under the Russian Criminal Code and accomplices of the Kiev regime will be strictly punished," the FSB added.

Since 2014 Ponomarev has been actively supporting the Kiev regime and publicly condemning Crimea’s reunification with Russia. Since the beginning of the special military operation, he has been publicly voicing support for armed units of the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion (both recognized as terrorist organizations in Russia), which were established in Ukraine and are fighting against Russian law enforcement and army servicemen. According to the FSB, he called on Russian citizens to commit a high treason by means of joining Ukrainian troops and fighting against Russia. "He also called for actions aimed at seizing power through ousting the current authorities and the Russian president," it said.

Ilya Ponomarev is taking part in the activities of the Freedom of Russia Legion, also known as Free Russia Legion, paramilitary association, which has been recognized as a terrorist organization by Russia’s Supreme Court, the Federal Security Service said.

"Along with conducting combat operations against Russia on the part of the Ukrainian armed forces, members of this organization use internet resources to recruit Russian citizens to commit extremist and terrorist crimes in the territory of our country," it said.

According to the FSB, Ponomarev is responsible for the organization’s relations with the Ukrainian mass media and government bodies and recruiting new members to fight against the Russian armed forces. "Ponomarev openly uses the military uniform, insignia and emblems of the Freedom of Russia Legion, possesses firearms and publicly demonstrates them when appearing on Ukrainian television. He says in public that he participates in combat operations against the Russian army on the part of Ukraine," it said.

Moreover, "in April 2022, Ponomarev was in the territory of the Azovstal plant, where he was conducting propaganda among the Azov regiment (outlawed in Russia as a terrorist organization) commanders calling on them to defend Mariupol," the FSB said, adding that in November-December 2022, he visited the combat engagement line in the Donetsk People’s Republic where he urged the Legion’s members to invigorate fighting against the Russian army.

Currently, Ponomarev is facing criminal charges under three articles of the Russian Criminal Code, including high treason.

Strikes Against Anti-ISIS Militias in Syria and Iraq Prove US War on Terror is a Sham

Dozens of people in Syria and Iraq were killed Saturday morning after the United States fired ‘precision munitions’ into the two countries against 85 targets ranging from command and control and intelligence centers to logistics bases used by anti-ISIS* militias. Sputnik asked a trio of experts about the strikes' implications for the region.

Russia called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Saturday in the wake of what Moscow characterized as a “new blatant act” of US “aggression against sovereign states.”

The strikes, carried out against what the Pentagon characterized as Iranian Revolutionary Guard Quds Force units and “affiliated militia” forces in Syria and Iraq, came after a months-long regional escalation of militia attacks against illegal US bases in Syria and outposts in Iraq, in response to Washington’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza. The Pentagon warned of potential strikes against targets inside Iraq and Syria last week after a militia drone attack against Tower 22, a US military outpost in Jordan just across the border from an illegal US base in southern Syria, which killed three American troops and injured 47 others.

Local media estimated that at least 23 people were killed in Syria and 16 in Iraq in Saturday’s attacks, with Damascus and Baghdad blasting Washington for its flagrant violation of the two countries’ sovereignty. Syria’s Foreign Ministry said it was “not surprised” to see American forces attack targets in the country’s east, “where our forces are fighting against the remnants of the ISIS terrorist organization, while the United States is working to revive ISIS terrorist activity.”

Syria’s Ministry of Culture slammed Washington’s aggression as a blatant violation of the Hague Convention, noting that the US strikes included an attack which hit the Citadel of al-Rahba, a regional ancient architectural marvel whose history goes back to the 9th century AD.

Along with the IRGC, Saturday’s strikes targeted the Popular Mobilization Forces, a militia coalition officially affiliated with the Iraqi government which played a key role in defeating ISIS in fierce battles between 2014 and 2017.

We’ve nurtured them since after World War II. Many different classified CIA projects helped that. I think we use ISIS and al-Qaida to help maintain instability in the region and our potential influence or justification for us to have a presence there to ‘provide stability’. But in actuality, it just doesn't provide stability.

And probably the key source of the instability there is our presence, our illegal presence in Syria and Iraq and the often, frequent escapades of Israel bombing adjacent countries as well as the treatment that they've put the Palestinians through over decades,” he stressed.
