An Indiana Catholic couple, Mary and Jeremy Cox, are taking their legal battle to the Supreme Court after their son was removed from their home by the state government for not using his preferred gender pronouns.
In 2019, their son declared a female gender identity, which the Coxes, devout Catholics, did not acknowledge in accordance with their religious beliefs. They instead sought therapy for what they considered underlying mental health issues.
“The Coxes also believed that he needed help for underlying mental health concerns, including an eating disorder. To address both issues, they provided therapeutic care for their child’s gender dysphoria and scheduled appointments with a specialist to help him with the eating disorder,” according to the press release.
The Indiana Department of Child Services started an investigation in 2021 when it came to light that the Coxes were not addressing their son by his chosen name and pronouns.
Despite the absence of abuse, Indiana officials decided that the couple’s non-acceptance of their son’s gender identity was harmful to the child’s mental health and contributed to an eating disorder, leading to the child’s removal. Online scammers stole $554 million in 2023

Of the $554 million stolen by online scammers, over $10 million of that sum was public funds doled out to criminals in the last five years by municipalities and First Nations across Canada.
According to the Toronto Star, fraudsters would begin by impersonating a service provider with the money ultimately ending up in bank accounts in Ontario.
Data provided by the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre shows there has been a 46% spike in fraud claims since 2021.
One of these scams recently took $1.5 million from the City of Greater Sudbury.
Many of the institutions that were the victims of these crimes did not make their losses public, preferring to deal with these matters privately in court.
While much of the stolen money has since been recovered, there are still funds which cannot be tracked down.
“It’s a major Canadian problem,” Toronto forensic accountant Al Rosen told the Toronto Star.
Rosen said that municipalities lack the basic controls over their accounting systems to properly keep themselves protected from fraud. Continue…

While Canada’s inflation rate dropped from 3.4% in December to 2.9% in January, Saskatchewan had an even more notable drop, revealed data from Statistics Canada.
Saskatchewan had a CPI of 2.7% in December 2023. This decreased to 1.9% in January 2024.
“In Saskatchewan, the collection of the carbon tax levy ceased in January 2024, contributing to the province’s year-over-year price decline of natural gas (-26.6%),” said Statistics Canada in its monthly report.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe commented on the decrease in his province.
“The Trudeau carbon tax was over a quarter of the cost of natural gas in SK. If the feds are actually serious about fighting inflation, they would scrap the carbon tax on everyone and everything,” said Moe.
Tiff Macklem, the Governor of the Bank of Canada, initially claimed in September that removing the carbon tax would cause a 0.15-point alleviation on inflation.

The Quebec government is demanding the federal government reimburse the province for money it has spent on providing social services to asylum seekers since 2021.
The Quebec government is asking Ottawa for $1 billion.
Quebec’s Immigration Minister Christine Fréchette called the situation “completely unreasonable.”
“Our capacity to provide services to asylum seekers has limits,” said Fréchette during the press conference.
The provincial government said it spent $576.9 million last year on social services to support migrants and a combined $470 million between 2021 and 2022.
The province has been receiving the lion’s share of asylum seekers over the past several years, taking in 55% of the total migrants living in Canada.
Quebec officials are also asking the Trudeau government to distribute migrants more equitably throughout the country, as the province currently hosts 160,651 of the 289,047 in the country.
In contrast, Fréchette said only 380 asylum seekers were taken in by Atlantic Canada last year, whereas 65,570 were received in Quebec. Continue…

David Haskell, an associate professor at Wilfrid Laurier University, sheds light on this debate. Commissioned by the Aristotle Foundation For Public Policy, Haskell conducted a study examining research related to DEI.
"In my research, I found that DEI instruction often lacks empirical evidence to support its claims of effectiveness," says Haskell. "Despite assertions that it fosters positive behavioral change, studies reveal serious methodological weaknesses and a lack of evidence supporting its efficacy."
Haskell's study, known as the Reality Check, highlights significant shortcomings in past research supporting DEI instruction. Methodological flaws, including issues with internal and external validity and publication bias, cast doubt on the credibility of previous findings.
Moreover, Haskell's research suggests that DEI instruction may inadvertently exacerbate bigotry rather than mitigate it. "Studies show that certain core concepts promoted during DEI training can activate bigotry rather than suppress it," he explains. "Claims of systemic racism and other key tenets of DEI lack empirical support, raising concerns about the accuracy of the information disseminated."
