Westbound I-70 closed overnight due to overturned, leaking tanker truck
NORTH FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are closed due to an overturned tanker truck that was leaking.
A crash involving that tanker truck and a passenger vehicle happened just before 3 a.m. Thursday near mile marker 13 in North Franklin Township, Washington County.
According to state police, the tanker truck was headed east when the driver lost control, drove through the grass median, and struck a car that was headed west. The crash caused the tanker to roll over.
The driver of the car was flown to the hospital.
Hazmat was called in because the tanker truck was leaking diesel fuel. Channel 11 has learned the tanker truck was carrying a polishing compound.
The Department of Environmental Protection said an environmental contractor is on site at the crash and that the extent of environmental impacts are not known at this time.
Westbound traffic is being detoured off of I-70 at Exit 15, Chestnut Street. Eastbound traffic is still moving.
