Gov. Gavin Newsom sending DOJ, National Guard attorneys to Alameda County to beef up prosecutions

OAKLAND, Calif. — Days after ordering a surge of California Highway Patrol officers to the East Bay, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday announced plans to also send state attorneys to Alameda County to beef up prosecutions of numerous “serious and complex crimes.”

The move by Newsom entails sending attorneys from the California Department of Justice and the National Guard to boost the capacity of Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price’s office in prosecuting “violent crimes, serious drug-related crimes and property crimes,” including retail theft and auto burglary, according to Newsom’s announcement.

The Austin Police Department held a press conference on Monday afternoon to confirm that a body had been pulled from Lady Bird Lake.

Police didn't disclose how long the body was in the water or how the person, who is still unidentified, had died.

"Homicide is actively investigating this as a death investigation," Public Information Officer Ariel Crumes told the media.

Despite a lack of details, the gruesome discovery inspired conspiracy theorists to share their thoughts on the once-defunct Lady Bird Lake Serial Killer - True Crime Facebook group.

Last year, several members of the group believed a serial killer they call the Rainey Street Ripper was walking among residents.

"I was 100% sure Austin had a serial killer last time they found a body," read a post from one of the 86,000 members on Tuesday morning. "I'm about 125% sure now."

Rumors of a supposed serial killer targeting young men and dumping their bodies in Lady Bird Lake in Rainey Street, a historic district located in downtown Austin, caused a stir last April, garnering international attention.

Jason John, 30, disappeared on February 5, 2023, while he was out celebrating a promotion at work.

Prosecutors released new footage of a viral attack on two police officers that appears to conflict with police accounts of their initial interaction with a group of migrants that quickly escalated into a melee that triggered nationwide outrage.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office released the footage three hours after a press conference on Thursday where he announced six new indictments in the Jan. 27 attack. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny had said the attack began when officers asked a group of men blocking the sidewalk outside a West 42nd Street migrants shelter to disperse.

“Everybody disperses except for Mr. Brito,” Kenny said, referring to 24-year-old Yohenry Brito, who was indicted earlier in the week and is being held on Rikers Island on $15,000 bail. “He turned around and got confrontational with the police officers. He refused a lawful order.”

Gavin Newsom facing legal action from fired Jewish general for alleged antisemitic discrimination, harassment

Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom and another state officials are facing legal action from a fired Air National Guard general who says he faced antisemitic discrimination, harassment and retaliation before being wrongfully terminated last year.

Retired Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Magram, who is Jewish, filed the lawsuit on Jan. 24 in a Los Angeles court. Magram is alleging that his former superior, Maj. Gen. Matthew Beevers, who now serves as the California Military Department's adjutant general, created a hostile work environment by engaging in numerous antisemitic behaviors over a period of two years and that complaints related to his conduct went unanswered by Newsom.
