"In ancient Rome, beating a Roman citizen was considered a serious offense. If a Roman citizen was unlawfully beaten, the perpetrator could face severe consequences, including fines, exile, or even death, depending on the severity of the beating and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The legal system in ancient Rome placed a high value on the rights and protections of its citizens, and harming a Roman citizen was taken very seriously."

Turning the other cheek was a passive aggressive way to goad someone into committing a serious crime. If a roman citizen struck back after being struck that would perhaps be considered a fair fight.
