Texas sues to stop NGO aiding in human smuggling at US-Mexico border
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) claims that Annunciation House has "engaged in legal violations such as facilitating illegal entry to the United States, alien harboring, human smuggling, and operating a stash house."
On Tuesday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) announced that he is suing to end the operations of a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in the state of Texas. Paxton claims that these taxpayer-funded organizations facilitate human smuggling and worsen illegal immigration.
"Today, I'm suing to end NGO's operations in Texas. The chaos at the southern border has created an environment where NGOs, funded with taxpayer money from the Biden Administration, facilitate astonishing horrors including human smuggling," Paxton wrote on X. "While the federal government perpetuates the lawlessness destroying this country, my office works day in and day out to hold these organizations responsible for worsening illegal immigration."
In a press release, Paxton's Office said that they have sued to revoke the operating registration for Annunciation House, which is a Catholic NGO.
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) claims in the lawsuit that Annunciation House has "engaged in legal violations such as facilitating illegal entry to the United States, alien harboring, human smuggling, and operating a stash house."
Paxton's Office said that they filed the suit after reviewing significant public record information that backs their claims.
The OAG claims that they demanded access to certain specified records to evaluate potential legal violations but Annunciation House failed to comply with their request.
In response to the request, Annunciation House sued the OAG to prevent the Attorney General from obtaining the requested documents.
The OAG said that due to the NGO's "flagrant failure to comply," the Office may terminate the business's right to operate in Texas.
The OAG lawsuit "seeks to revoke Annunciation House's authorization to do business in Texas and asks the court to appoint a receiver to liquidate their assets."
Annunciation House began operating as a Catholic nonprofit in Texas in the 1980s.
The organization describes itself as a volunteer organization that "offers hospitality to migrants, immigrants, and refugees in El Paso, Texas."
"Rooted in Catholic social teaching, the volunteers of Annunciation House live simply and in community, in the same houses as the guests we serve, who are mostly from Mexico and Central America," the organization's website states. "We also participate in advocacy and education around immigration issues. We seek to be a voice for justice and compassion, especially on behalf of the most marginalized of our society."
Annunciation House called Paxton's lawsuit "shameful" and said in a statement to Fox News: "This is no different from the work of schools who enroll migrant children, the clinics and hospitals who care for the needs of their ill, the churches, synagogues, and mosques who welcome their families to join in worship."
"For the Attorney General to suddenly attack Annunciation House after forty-six years of service to the poor is simply shameful," the nonprofit said.
The legal battle comes amid a historic border crisis that has greatly impacted the state of Texas. Over the past few years, Texas has fought to increase broader border security measures, while the federal government has fought to keep the US-Southern border open, embracing the role of NGOs and providing them with millions of dollars in taxpayer funds that aid illegal immigration.

Soldiers describe how stealing Palestinian property has become totally routine in the Gaza war, with minimal pushback from commanders.
Israeli soldiers fighting in Gaza have not been shy about posting videos on social media gleefully documenting their wanton destruction of buildings and humiliation of Palestinian detainees. Some of these clips were even exhibited in South Africa’s presentation at the International Court of Justice last month as evidence of genocide. But there is another war crime being readily documented by Israeli soldiers that has garnered less attention and condemnation despite its prevalence: looting.
In November, the Palestinian singer Hamada Nasrallah was shocked to discover a TikTok of a soldier playing the guitar that his father had bought him 15 years earlier. Other videos uploaded to social media in recent months show Israeli soldiers boasting about finding wristwatches; unboxing someone’s collection of soccer shirts; and stealing rugs, groceries, and jewelry.
In a Facebook group for Israeli women comprising nearly 100,000 users, someone wondered what to do with the “gifts from Gaza” that her partner, a soldier, had brought back for her. Sharing a photo of cosmetic products, she wrote: “Everything is sealed except for one product. Would you use these? And does someone know the products or are they only in Gaza?”
Indeed, since the start of Israel’s ground invasion in late October, soldiers have been taking whatever they can get their hands on from the homes of Palestinians who have been forced to flee. More than an open secret, the phenomenon has been widely — and uncritically — reported in the Israeli media, while rabbis from the Religious Zionist movement have been answering soldiers’ questions about what is permissible to loot according to Jewish law.
Soldiers who returned from fighting in Gaza confirmed to +972 Magazine and Local Call that the phenomenon is ubiquitous, and that for the most part their commanders are allowing it to happen. “People took things — mugs, books, each one the souvenir that does it for him,” said one soldier, who admitted that he himself took a “souvenir” from one of the medical centers that the army occupied.
Another soldier, who served in northern and central Gaza, testified that soldiers “took rugs, blankets, [and] kitchen utensils,” and explained that there was no briefing on the matter from the army either before entering or while in the field. “There was zero talk about it from the commanders,” he said. “Everyone knows that people are taking things. It’s considered funny — people say: ‘Send me to The Hague.’ It doesn’t happen in secret. The commanders saw, everyone knows, and no one seems to care.”
The soldier offered his explanation for why the phenomenon is so widespread: “There is something about this reality in which the house is already [in ruins] that allows you to take a plate or rug. In one of the operations, in a destroyed house, there was a cupboard with antique kitchen utensils, special plates, special mugs. I saw them being looted, unfortunately.”
“[The commanders] didn’t really talk to us about it,” another soldier testified. “They didn’t say you couldn’t take things. And most people felt the need to take a souvenir.”
The soldier noted that the looting was no secret; indeed, some of their seniors were doing it too. “The company sergeant major distributed Qur’an study books that he found and gave to whomever wanted them,” he said. “Another soldier took a set of coffee mugs, a serving tray, and a pot. Another unit, whom we met after they returned from a tour, brought a motorcycle, like the Nukhba [Hamas special forces] motorcycles. One of the soldiers declared that it was his. They [the soldiers] talked about renovating it.”
Another soldier who served in Gaza told +972 and Local Call that soldiers took “prayer beads, spoons, glasses, coffee pots, jewelry, rings. Whatever is easy and accessible is taken. Not everything, but people felt like the lords of the land.” He noted also that “maps from children’s textbooks were taken to show how they are taught there.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has opened the first-ever Games of the Future in Kazan
The Games of the Future opened in the Russian city of Kazan on Wednesday. The first-ever international phygital event combines conventional and electronic sports.

Biden Transferring Student Debt from 153,000 Borrowers, Notifies Them in Emails
More than 150,000 borrowers are receiving emails from President Joe Biden on Wednesday stating that all or part of their “federal student loans will be forgiven” in what is really a transfer of the debt to the American taxpayer.
Politico reported that on Wednesday, the Biden administration was set to blast out emails to some 153,000 loan borrowers, who will see $1.2 billion transferred out of their collective debts under his Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan.
In the letter, the politically vulnerable president takes credit for the “forgiveness” in the first sentence.
“Congratulations—all or a portion of your federal student loans will be forgiven because you qualify for early loan forgiveness under my Administration’s SAVE Plan,” the email, published by Politico, reads.
“From day one of my Administration, I vowed to fix student loan programs so higher education can be a ticket to the middle class—not a barrier to opportunity,” the letter states. Biden adds he hopes “this relief gives you a little more breathing room.”
The document includes the phrase “SHARE WHAT THIS RELIEF MEANS TO YOU,” which links to a studentaid.gov page that is not yet accessible.
“The borrowers receiving relief are the first to benefit from a SAVE plan policy that provides debt forgiveness to borrowers who have been in repayment after as little as 10 years and took out $12,000 or less in student loans,” the White House stated in a press release. Per Politico, Biden will speak Wednesday about the move at an event in Los Angeles.
According to Biden’s letter, the Department of Education will inform loan servicers if borrowers are eligible, and after the servicer applies the “forgiveness,” they will announce it to the borrowers.
The Biden administration previously crafted a $430 billion student debt transfer plan, which was ultimately struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2023, as Breitbart News Senior Editor Joel Pollack reported at the time:
The plan was criticized for attempting to evade Congress’s power to control spending and debts, for prioritizing elite college graduates over working-class Americans who chose not to go to college, and for punishing those who paid off their loans or chose fields of study more likely to lead to finding good jobs.
As NPR notes, the SAVE plan “has become a key vehicle for President Biden” after the high court ruled against his nearly half-a-trillion-dollar debt write-off.
U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona told NPR that he expects the latest move will be challenged in court when asked if it could survive legal challenge:
We’re using the regulatory process, which we believe includes public comment and negotiations with folks that don’t agree with us. So we do believe through this process it can continue, but we recognize that no matter what turn we make, we’re going to have folks challenging it. There are some that benefit from the system the way it was and I expect to hear from them. And, if I don’t hear from them, that means I’m not pushing hard enough
The move comes as Biden trails former President Donald Trump by nearly two percentage points nationally in the RealClearPolling average and as Biden’s approval rating in late January rivaled a historic low, as Breitbart News reported, citing Gallup.
It also comes as Biden has faced intense scrutiny over his age and mental acuity following the release of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s damning reroot on the president’s classified document investigation, in which Hur described Biden’s memory as “significantly limited.”
